Deadlier than OK Corral, the controversial tale of one family's protest against government in America's Old West during WWI.
On February 10, 1918, deep in the Galiuro Mountains of southeast Arizona, a shootout erupted in the early dawn. When it was over, three lawmen and one gold miner were dead. The largest manhunt in Arizona history ensued; eventually, leading to the capture of John Power, Tom Power, and Tom Sisson. The details of the shootout were lost in a whirlwind of passion, politics, and conflicting accounts of the time.
Ninety-five years later there is still a cloud of confusion and controversy surrounding what is considered to be one of the last great shootouts of the Old West. Who fired the first shot? Were the 'lawmen' justified in their claims of draft evasion? Were the 'outlaws' given a fair trial? Why did they spend 42 years in prison? Books, newspaper and magazine articles, editorials, and even a short documentary have all probed these questions yet all have failed to provide conclusive answers about the events surrounding the infamous Power Brothers Shootout of 1918.
I first became aware of the Power family on an overseas trip for another project. I was given the book Shootout At Dawn, by my father-in-law, who insisted this was a story that needed to be a documentary film. It only took a quick read to realize he was right! Upon returning from that trip I began the process of researching the story and was amazed at how passionate those who knew about the shootout were about what had transpired over 95 years ago. Not one person I interviewed was impartial about this story. People either side with the lawmen or with the Power family--no one sits on the fence when it comes to this shootout.
Two years have now passed and we've assembled an impressive project with a great cast consisting of those close to the story itself, as well as educators, historians, and authors who bring new light to this nearly century old tale. Heidi Osselaer (Historian), Eduardo Pagan (Historian/PBS History Detectives), Thomas Cobb (Author of Crazy Heart, With Blood in Their Eyes), Arizona Republic writer Don Dedera, family members of the slain lawmen, and close friends to the Power Family, all have been interviewed and bring a tremendous amount of insight to this controversial piece of American history.
WHAT'S BEEN DONE SO FAR?
A solid documentary film is founded upon sound research. Professor Heidi Osselaer and myself have spent countless hours researching nearly every angle possible in hopes that we can produce a rock solid historical documentary that is entertaining, educational, and that brings clarity to a story ripe with controversy.
My crew and I have taken 4 separate trips to the Power Cabin, spent ten months meeting and interviewing with all the documentary participants, as well as locking rights to the books most well known for this piece of AZ history (The Evaders, and Shootout at Dawn). We have logged roughly 65 hours of interviews, location B-Roll, and source material image capture. Interviews are taking place all over Arizona, California, Texas, and New Mexico.
All of the travel, production costs, research fees, and costs associated with obtaining rights to this great story have all been independently financed. This is a true independent film project - AKA labor of love. Many have donated their time and talents to helping the process move along in an effort to make this a creative and professional documentary film. We are nearly there and are now in need of your help to make the last push for completion.
PLEASE HELP US MAKE IT HAPPEN!
HOW WILL FUNDS BE USED?
This Kickstarter campaign has been put into place to help us fund the very expensive processes of obtaining rights to historical imagery, producing the cinematic recreations, creating the score, and finishing the post production color and sound for the film. Our goal is to reach a bare minimum of $25,000. We've put together some tremendous rewards that will appeal to any lover of the Old West and its rich history.
Every dollar donated will be put towards finishing the film, which is now nearly two years in the making.
It's a tough thing to ask others for their hard earned money to support an independent film. Thank you so very much for taking the time to back this project. Our hope is that we put together a film that both entertains and educates viewers of all ages about one of the most tragic and unknown gunfights that is rich in America's early 20th century history.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Right now our only major obstacle is coming up with enough funds to secure image rights to the very limited library of images that relate to our story. AHS here in Arizona has fees that aren't accessible to independent filmmakers. Kickstarter funds will be used heavily to fund that image acquisition effort.
Independent documentaries are extremely powerful and give non-studio filmmakers, like myself, an amazing opportunity to share amazing stories that might otherwise not be told. Filmmaking is an inherently risky and difficult process. However, we've had such a tremendous outpouring of support from those close to this story that we feel very confident that with additional funding from this campaign we'll provide a rock solid documentary film about one of the Old West's deadliest gunfights.
