I've always been fascinated by classic still life photography, it's what inspired me to become a photographer. When I became interested in 3D photography, naturally I wanted to see how it could be used to create still life images. Having a third dimension to use in composing an image was like rediscovering photography.

I have been photographing a series of flowers using a 3D camera rig I built especially for close up photography. Originally I set out to photograph the perfect examples of flowers, but I have found so much more beauty and interest in the ones that are not perfect. Whether they are influenced by the elements, time or simply genetics, finding flowers with distinct personalities transformed these pictures of flowers into portraits of flowers. 

The Book:

I've designed a book of images from my series of Flower Portraits. It's a 100 page, 8x8" softcover book with a pocket in the back cover to hold two pairs of 3D glasses, because of course, the book is in 3D. It contains 46 Flower Portraits. The left page is the image in 2D, and the right page is the same image in 3D. 

Being able to compare a 3D image directly to its 2D counterpart is a unique experience and has always been part of the concept for this book. Most discussions of 3D these days tend to be polarizing debates about movies- one of the reasons I started working in 3D was to see what I could do with the medium. I know I've succeeded when someone tells me: "I've never seen anything like this before." Not to brag, but it happens a lot and I love it.
