Instead of releasing my album Postcards on CDs, I'm releasing it on postcards. Choose from several packages to keep or to share.

Hej. My name is Michael O'Shea (aka Kinjac) and I'm releasing an album called Postcards. I’m raising funds on Kickstarter to be able to physically release the album. This usually means by pressing CDs, but in this case I’m going to print the album on postcards.

I know what you’re thinking: “Print an album on postcards? That’s absurd. It doesn’t even make sense.” Well you know what? I think that putting music onto little petroleum discs that get scratched up over time and usually end up just getting ripped to a computer and then having the album art sit on a shelf or in a box out of sight somewhere is pretty absurd.

But I think that having a download code on the back of a 5x7 inch archival quality photographic print you can easily frame or send to someone in the mail is a great idea. Thus, I present to you the concept of sonic postcards, or as I like to call them: “Sonicards.” Catchy, right?

“What’s in it for me?” you ask? Well, if you look to the right you’ll see a list of several rewards for supporting this Kickstarter project. You can order the album as a single postcard, a giant 13x19 inch photographic print, or sets of postcards with my photography printed on them. There are two packages for the sets: one designed for you to keep for yourself and one designed for you to share with others.

Please help support this project by pledging on Kickstarter and don’t forget to read more about the Postcards album below. Thanks!

-Michael O'Shea

By releasing the album as sonic postcards with download codes, it's the best of two worlds: the usability and fidelity of digital audio formats mixed with the physicality and aesthetics of a visual art object.

The backstory to the Postcards album is that it’s about a relationship I had with a swedish girl. Last year I managed to fall in love with said swede before we ever met in person. How this happened was by sending postcards. Not postcards in the traditional sense, that is sending pieces of paper with messages and stamps via mail, but postcards more broadly defined as short messages sent across long distances. Literally speaking, we were exchanging a lot of emails, facebook messages, skype videos and other such forms of modern instantaneous electronic communication. And despite their lack of nostalgic appeal, these modern postcards eventually led to transatlantic flights in both directions and me moving to live in Stockholm for a summer. But I like to re-conceptualize these modern forms of communication as "postcards" because it gives them a more Romantic feel harkening back to more poetic bygone times.

This is my 8th release as a solo artist/producer. I do all the writing, recording, mixing and mastering for my albums in my own studio and release through my own independent record label (Solotechne). This is the first time I have sought external funding for a project and your support in this venture is inexpressibly appreciated.

Thanks for your support!

FAQ

  • A Sonicard is a postcard with a download code for music printed on it.

It is a new method for music distribution that allows for having a physical object with album art, but at a lower cost than vinyl and CDs and with the ease and fidelity of digital audio.

You can keep them for yourself or send them to friends. Frame them and hang them on your walls, collect them, trade them. Or send them to your friends through the mail and give them the gift of an album download and a quick note.
