An interactive puzzle game for dogs. Tennis ball goes in. Tennis ball and treats come out!
The Amazing Treat Machine automatically rewards your dog with treats when he or she drops a tennis ball inside.
Tennis ball goes in. Tennis ball and treats come out!
Think of the feeling you get when solving a crossword puzzle or playing a game. Your pup will experience that same excitement every time a tennis ball and treats roll out. It's also a great way for your dog to work for their food and lots of fun to teach them how to use.
I created the original Amazing Treat Machine for our dog, Hustler, after he was diagnosed with hip and elbow dysplasia. Realizing he could no longer run and fetch his tennis ball (and Hustler LOVES tennis balls), I needed to create a game that would keep him engaged and happy.
Our first version was made of thrown together parts from the hardware store and our friends quickly wanted one of their own. That lead me to experiment with a variety of materials before deciding on fold together, die-cut cardboard for the original Amazing Treat Machine. CARDBOARD?!!?! Yes... Cardboard.
People loved the concept, a partially recycled material that could be recycled when it was worn. However, they also wanted something more sturdy that would stand the test of time. Over the past year I tinkered with various designs and the wooden Amazing Treat Machine was born.
I kept the minimalist cube shape and you still use a recycled water bottle as the treat dispenser (the ball hits the bottle – holes cut in the bottom allow treats to fall out). The wooden panels easily fit together and are snugly fastened with a threaded rod that also secures the treat dispenser and prevents it from falling out.
We need the help of the Kickstarter community to raise funds and bring the wooden Amazing Treat Machine to life. I've developed the prototype (seen in the video) and will be finished with the final production plans by the end of the year. We're working to source the best solution for sustainable, quality wood along with durable, safe hardware and to finalize our manufacturing efforts.
Update: Arduino Enabled, Internet Connected Hack & Mod Version!
As a geek, I've always wanted to hack and modify the Amazing Treat Machine to include some Arduino functionality. Over the holidays I had a chance to make some tweaks and create an Arduino platform that's perfect for hacking! Don't worry, the original, non-Arduino toy is still available, but if you're "Arduino inclined" or "Ardunio interested", check out my update and our new Arduino rewards!
We're really excited about our toy and we hope you are, too!
Please let us know if you have any questions. We hope you'll help fund the wooden Amazing Treat Machine and share it with your friends. Woof!
10% of all wooden Amazing Treat Machine profits will be donated to Best Friends Animal Society.

Yes! I'm using a natural, safe Butcher Block Conditioner to seal the toy.
The conditioner is described as such:
"The penetrating quality of food-grade mineral oil along with the water-resistant traits of beeswax and carnauba wax rejuvenates the wood and prevents drying and cracking. The naturally antibacterial waxes help repair knife marks and protect the wood by keeping the mineral oil in and the moisture out."
The conditioner is also listed as "Exceeding the requirement set forth in the US FDA Regulations for direct and indirect food contact."
I will also deliver the toy unsealed by request, in case anyone wants to seal it themselves.
Yes! The toy should work with any ball between 1.5 and 3 inches in diameter and upward of 1 ounce in weight.
The number of treats that come out is entirely random. Treats, or dry dog food, are held inside the plastic water bottle. The treats shake out when the ball hits the bottle as it passes through the toy.
The number of holes you cut in the bottom of the bottle help regulate how many treats fall out when the ball hits it. More holes – More treats! The holes are easy to cut with scissors and, unfortunately, there are plenty of empty plastic water bottles available for experimentation.
A standard water bottle will hold about a cup of dry dog food.
No – But heavier balls (such as rubber Kong balls) have more mass and will tend to roll further than tennis balls.
There are few forces known to man that will hold up against an exuberant puppy determined to get his or her treats.
I recommend always supervising your dog when using the toy and working with it as a training tool and game to play. Even though Hustler has used the toy for a few years now, I still put it away when we're not using it. When I take the toy out he knows it's time to play – Once he works through a half-cup of kibble I put the toy away.
It will not! The threaded rod which holds the toy together is inserted through the water bottle. The water bottle cannot fall out of the toy.
Yes. Yes they will. The treats are held in the bottle by gravity and leverage. They're pretty secure, and the weight of the wooden toy makes it very sturdy. Treats won't randomly fall out, but if you shake the toy a lot, they'll fall out.
Yes it does! I tested and everything works perfectly using Kong "AirDog Squeaker Small" tennis balls (1-7/8" diameter, weight 1oz – Noted as 'For dogs up to 20lbs'). Similarly sized/weighted small tennis balls should work equally well.
