The Fluid Ribbon Chair challenges the idea of sitting still.  People have evolved to move...to groove...to flow, but static chairs restrict this flow.  Even the most ergonomic positions are still static, and the body quickly fatigues from any one position no matter how perfect it is.

Splitting the chair in half offers a new sitting experience.  Rock, roll, bounce, shift, fidget, tap, shimmy, sway, hip-hop and don’t stop!  It feels more like floating than sitting.

The aluminum version is a success and has been sold already, but other materials would be better for a production chair right now.

July 4, 2011...9:43am…the phone rings… 

“Michael, it’s Jeremy. I have a problem for you to solve.  For 10 years I have been trying to figure out what kind of ergonomic chair will work for me.  My back is killing me, and I’m exhausted from sitting all day. I’ve tried everything, nothing works, and I can’t spend thousands of dollars.  Can you design something for me?"

...the Solution... 

As a biomechanical engineer, I recognized that splitting the chair into two independent halves would cradle and integrate with each half of the body; allowing natural biomechanical movements.  For example, when we twist our torso to reach for something or to stretch while sitting, our hips rotate and push one leg in front of the other.  Chairs with solid seats and backs restrict that natural movement of the body. Splitting the chair allows these subtle but important biomechanical movements...and the result is an incredible feeling of freedom while sitting.  

The concept prototype was a success...

...followed by extensive refinement including anthropometrics, aesthetics, CAD modeling... 

...and Finite Element Analysis to make sure it would be the perfect balance of strength and flexibility...  

The design was complete and ready for manufacturing...
