About this project

In the Summer of 2009 AkaBella launched SongCorps: a non-profit program of the Ink People Center for the Arts. The mission of SongCorps is to promote multicultural vocal music through research, education, publishing and concerts. One of the long-term goals of SongCorps is to send ambassador groups like AkaBella around the world to study and experience vocal music traditions at the source.

Our first endeavor under SongCorps is the EARS, or "Exploring American Roots Songs", Project. American traditional music has typically been underrepresented in AkaBella's repertoire. We want to change that so we can eventually be ambassadors of our own musical heritage when we travel abroad to other countries, or even just to the elementary school down the street.

The tentative tour route will take us through Marin, Martinez, Mountain View, Montara, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Ojai, Santa Barbara, San Diego, LA, Modesto, Chico, Ashland, Olympia, Seattle, Bellingham, Portland, Eugene, Cave Junction and back home. AkaBella will be performing in public schools by day and in concerts and festivals by night. We will also be meeting with master teachers along the way to learn new songs. This itinerary is fluid and will be shaped by the amount of support we are able to garner from audiences and individual donors. Places to play and stay will also be integral in making the tour self-sustaining.

Your generous contribution will go towards travel expenses, lesson and workshop fees, deferred cost of school performances, and some food and lodging. What it will NOT go toward: promotion, sequined costumes, wine, chocolate, kittens or other rock star accoutrement.
