A desperate race against time to pay a blood debt on a cursed airship drags Gavin Roberts into the twisted world of the opium trade.
Overview: This funding project is to financially underwrite Book One of Airship Trilogy, a steampunk trilogy I am writing. Book One is entitled Steam on the Horizon.

Synopsis of Airship Trilogy: When a blown boiler on the airship Horizon leaves her captain and engineer dead, First Mate Gavin Roberts strikes a deal with Sir Cornelius Smothers, father of the unfortunate captain, to purchase the ruined airship in three years. Smothers rules the air and water of European commerce with an iron fist and his gentleman's agreement with Roberts means a swift and vengeful death to the new captain of the Horizon if he defaults on the agreement. Struggling to keep the supposed-cursed ship on course and pay his massive debt, Roberts finds himself gradually and reluctantly pulled into the seedy, dangerous world of the opium trade in a desperate venture to turn a decent profit.
Opium brings the Horizon and her reluctant captain ranging far across the Orient, the Indies, and the Dark Continent as the ship and her crew become more entangled with the dark and twisted world of the Victorian era drug trade. Roberts must grapple furiously with his conscience, malfunctioning boilers, and an airship with a mind of her own in a race against time, with the shadow of Sir Smothers always looming in the trailing steam plumes the Horizon leaves behind her.
Genre: Airship Trilogy is best described as "historical steampunk fiction" and will interweave historic events such as the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 and the Irish potato famine to create a merger of history, technology, and fantasy that satisfies the intellect as well as the creative.
Time Frame: Steam on the Horizon is slated to be available by February 2013 as a self-published e-book available on Amazon and through Smashwords. I'll also have a limited supply of softback paper copies available.
Your Money: I recently quit my job on a gamble that I could raise funding and crank out an awesome steampunk trilogy without being forced to write it on scraps of fast food wrappers inside a cardboard box in an abandoned alley. Your financial support in this madcap adventure will ensure that I can write Steam on the Horizon in a timely manner and stay financially afloat for six months.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I taught college-level writing for seven years and have multiple book-length stories on fanfiction.net. While my writing background is quite rich, this trilogy will deal with a multiple of topics that I am not familiar with such as steam boiler mechanics, 19th century navigation techniques, the Crimean War, opium production, gangrene, silk production, and other diverse topics. Luckily, a master's degree in literature cannot be earned without highly developed research skills and a bloodhound's nose for tracking down the information one wishes to find. Writing this trilogy will be an intellectual discovery for me, and I look forward to delving into the vast and sundry topics that must be covered for this trilogy to spring to life.
