The Collective Liberation Tour The Collective Liberation tour is a cross-cultural exchange between South Africa and California that will deeply delve into the world of narrative. The tour will visit Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, Los Angeles, and end in the Bay Area. Throughout the tour, we will film stories and our interactions with locals. We will produce a DVD of compelling stories from the tour and edutainment media for the internet. We will also create possibilities for collaboration between South Africans and Californians.

Why South Africa? South Africa is a fascinating if imperfect model of a peaceful transition of power from a wealthy minority towards a more inclusive society. Movements throughout the world can learn from South Africa’s experience in reconciling with their oppressors, integration of music into the movement, and liberation movements. California has fascinating if imperfect models of engaging diverse communities in ecological justice work and building community resilience.

Transformative Stories Our main focus is transformative stories. We ask people to tell us about times in their lives in which they learned something or became a different person. We want to know about the incidences that shape people into who they are. We also want to know how their experience of freedom has changed over the years. And where their water and food comes from. We also want to know about their people and how they identify.

We had conversations with pastors, former gang leaders, two freedom fighters, three emcees, rastas, community childcare, youth, Zimbabwean immigrants, minstrels, shack dwellers, ex-cons, a reggae artist, and more.

What the Money is for I just got back from South Africa, and I brought back over 60 hours of footage and thousands of photographs. We now need to produce high quality edutainment videos and digital stories. We will edit footage into a compelling set of stories on DVD and edutaining clips to post to the internet, as well as pay for outstanding trip expenses.
