Pits And Perception
Project by Cyrus Mejia
Project by Cyrus Mejia

This project is called Pits and Perception, and with this art I hope to challenge the commonly accepted perception we have of pit bulls.
Kickstarter is a cool new way for artists to raise funds using the Internet. And they were kind enough to invite me to put my project up here for you to consider. Thank you Kickstarter, and thank all of you for considering this project!
I made 12 very large paintings of pit bulls. I made them extra large (49"x56") to get people to stop and look at the dogs. They’re not monsters or vicious killers, they don’t start wars or make atom bombs, they’re just very sweet dogs.
I have a couple of exhibitions scheduled and I need some funding for crating, shipping and insuring the paintings. I’ve already received a grant from The Culture and Animals Foundation to create the paintings and cover part of the cost of packing and shipping. But I still need $2500.00. And that’s where you come in!
For a donation of $10 or more I’ll give you supporter credit at all the Pits and Perception exhibitions. We’ll have a list of supporter’s names on the wall and your name will be on it.
For a donation of $25 or more you’ll get supporter credit and I’ll send you a signed giclee print of one of the four original charcoal sketches I did at the beginning of the Pits and Perception project.
For a donation of $50 or more you get supporter credit plus I’ll send you two of the prints.
For a donation of $100 or more you get supporter credit at all the shows, and I’ll send you all four prints of the drawings.
So that’s it. Thank you very much for participating. Check out my website at http://cyrusmejia.com, and check out Best Friends website at http://bestfriends.org. And if you live near one of the shows please come to the reception and say hi!
Thank you very much!

Cyrus Mejia contemporary artist, is co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society. Mejia believes art is activism, grabbing attention and shining light into darkness! His art reflects the ideals of kindness and compassion while shining a light on speciesism, ignorance and cruelty.
When asked how he hoped his art would be remembered, one of the famous abstract expressionist painters said: "I hope my art will have as much impact on society as that of an old shoe" Cyrus Mejia does not follow this philosophy! He believes art does have an important role to play in our world, that: "Art can focus the attention and direct the emotions in ways no other medium can achieve". This idea is as old as human history. Art is sometimes the only thing left from pre-historic societies. The cave paintings, the carvings and pottery, tell us all we know about what went on thousands of years ago. And the artist/shaman was an important figure in ancient society. He/she told the story, created the myth, described the unknown, and pointed the way! This was not "art for art's sake" but art for life's sake! This is the art that Cyrus Mejia strives to create.
