LEARN MORE during a month in japan, artist meghan keane will create a sustainable installation that responds to the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, textures of a country rich in cultural paradox and natural wonder. based on keane's current practice of transforming materials and obsessive loop-making, the artwork will ultimately be a large-scale installation made primarily of objects and materials gathered along the way, with particular emphasis on locally made items (rice paper? nori? japanese surgical supplies!? you bet!). drawings, photos, journal entries and creative contributions from encounters along the way will be encouraged and included.
fiscal supporters of the project are welcome to submit their thoughts on the project via email through march 30, 2010. the emails will be printed (or hand re-written) and drawn/printed on/decoupaged/cut up and integrated into the installation's growth upon arrival in japan.
filmmaker michael keane will video document the creative process as well as the environment, the culture, and the personal interactions that fuel the work's creation.
at the end of the journey, PROJECT NIHON will put on a three-day exhibition event in Tokyo (see calendar below for details). when the event is over, the only thing that will remain of a project that is the ultimate embrace of the ephemeral, is 37 days of raw footage on two giant hard drives.
the documentary that will follow is the poetic remnant of a project that explores the terrain between cultural difference and the universal elements of human experience and expression.
PROJECT CALENDAR -- 2010
.......18 MARCH Arrive in Tokyo empty handed.......19 MARCH - 13 APRIL Travel through the most historically/culturally relevant and geographically breathtaking sites in Japan, approx. one city per day, making art and filming it.
.......THURSDAY 15 APRIL Install final artwork in Design Festa Gallery, Tokyo
.......FRIDAY 16 APRIL Installation opening party at Design Festa Gallery + screening of documentary footage (free)
.......SATURDAY 17 APRIL Installation on view to public all day Artist Talk @ 1pm (free) Public Workshop: add work to the installation! @ 3pm (free)
.......SUNDAY 18 APRIL Closing party with deinstallation performance and art ownership transfer ceremony ($20 suggested donation for artwork acquisition, though no one who would like to adopt part of the artwork will be turned down) (free to watch performance)
.......22 APRIL Return to NYC .......JULY 2010 Catalog of exhibition and project will become available
.......FALL 2010 - 2011 Documentary will premiere in NYC and travel the globe to any city with interested audiences! Cities we are planning screenings at (thus far) include: Rome, Montreal, Paris, Tokyo, Mpls/St.Paul, Chicago

PROJECT NIHON is their first international-scale artistic collaboration. they are excited to finally be doing a project that is as meaningful to others (they hope!) as it is to themselves and that fully exploits each of their unique creative talents.
meghan and michael currently live and work on opposite sides of brooklyn, ny.
