The mission of the Black Weblog Awards is to increase awareness of the variety of Black bloggers, video bloggers, and podcasters by recognizing them in over 30 categories. Our categories range from science and technology to news and politics. Since 2005, we have recognized nearly 200 blogs, and our past winners have went on to receive global press in NPR, CNN, CNBC, the BBC, USA Today, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. They have gone on to form large blog networks and communities of readers that cross gender, race, and national lines. In short, when one wins a Black Weblog Award, they are catapulted to the next level of their craft.
Now that we are in our sixth year, we are expanding our mission to capture more of the Black blogosphere, increase awareness of one of the fastest growing demographics on the web, and ensure our success in the years to come.
In order to do this, we need help from the online community. In 2011, we want to have a live awards ceremony with trophies, streaming video, and a private, catered reception. This will not only put the Black Weblog Awards on the map physically, but also metaphorically, showing that the recognition of the breadth and depth of knowledge, experience, and cultural significance is truly worth showcasing.
