Laying Out the Parables (and 302% Funded!!)
Today, at 6 days out from project completion, we're only $465 from $5K with 93 backers! I think there's a chance we might actually hit the $5K mark, which would be... really amazing. Thank you all for spreading the word...! Let's keep it going!
Meanwhile, for your perusal today I've attached a page from the print version. The layout professional and I are currently playing with how we're setting out the parables, definitions, and quotes that litter the book. This page, I think, is pretty close to what I was hoping for, with the drop-cap that lies "under" the text.
I wish I could maintain these prettifications into the e-book versions, but right now short of issuing a PDF there's just no easy way to do anything like this. The Kindle Fire could probably support it, but that's a specialized mark-up that will break when viewed on a regular Kindle (because that makes total sense, right?). I'm not sure ePub would be handle all of this either, but even if I could I wouldn't be able to sell that specific ePub through Smashwords (my main distributor) because Smashwords won't let me upload a specific ePub; instead it forces me to run a Word document through their homegrown converter which dumps the results to text, palm and plain HTML as well as everything else so... yes, you can imagine how that looks when it's done. Right now the standardization in the e-book field is not so great, let's say, and the choices for layout are as limited as they were for the web when it was in its infancy... and possibly more annoying because of the proliferation of standards. :,
I'm afraid the print book will have to remain the more stylish version!
But anyway, enjoy the sneak peek! And please, pass us on! Only 6 days now!

PDF is my favourite ebook format because I don't own any kind of fancy ebook reader thingy - I suspect I'm not the only one?

Oh, that's so pretty! Wish I had the money to bump up to the tier for a print version.

You do get used to it! The margins on this particular text are kind of strange to me, from a modern novel-reader's perspective, but when I see the two-page spread I get powerful associations with the illuminated manuscripts that it's borrowing its margins and spacing from... I'll have to get a photo of the two-page spread for you all to see. :)
I don't see why I couldn't get Dave to dump a PDF from InDesign when he's done! If people really would prefer that copy, I've got no problem handing it out. :)

Oh, it's lovely! (Given that one page I'd move your name lower but by page 75 I'd be looking right past it.)
Maybe a pretty PDF could be a backer extra? *big eyes*
