Margarita Benitez is an art + technology and fiber artist based in Chicago + Miami. She is interested in the explorations of art within the making and DIY culture. Her work is rooted in exploring underlying social issues in technology – exploring how today’s society copes with the overwhelming presence of technology, surveillance, data mining and media bombardment.
Margarita's interest in weaving occurred somewhat backwards to a traditional weaving experience. She had never woven prior to attending a boot camp workshop at The Jacquard Center with Bethanne Knudson. Her first weaving experience was with industrial Jacquard looms. She proceeded to learn more about weaving as she progressed to the TC-1 loom, a computerized floor loom, during her graduate studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Eventually, she finally made her way to weaving on floor and table looms but there was no comparison to the computer controlled looms. No one wants to see this project succeed more than her.
Best wishes for your project.. keep update
Thanks for the update. Congratulations on the further funding. We all want to try it as soon as the demo version is running! Let us know where! Sorry I won't be in Arizona...Ann Pettit
Are you still taking contributions? I'm very interested in the project.
Hi Virginia,
The textile rewards have taken a bit longer to process due to unforeseen circumstances that had occurred during the last few months. The fact that I was using in kind facilities meant that I had to figure out access and wait for all (or most) of the files to come in. At the moment all the scarves and textile files have been printed. I steam set some of the fabrics today and will steam set the rest of them over the weekend. I just actually gained access to the steam setter last week and had to run a test to ensure it worked ok with the fabric coating. As I moved cities I need to find a local seamstress to hem the scarves. I am hoping that I will find that last key piece by the weekend and have the scarves out as soon as they are hemmed. The textile pieces should be shipping some tomorrow, some at the beginning of next week after they have been steamed. My sincerest apologies for the delay but as I relied on the kindness of others for access to certain technologies.
Just a few more days I hope!!! I'm as excited to get these to you a.s.a.p.!!!

Just curious - I donated $45 to this project - which I still think is a great project BTW, but never received the silk scarf. Is there something else I should have done? Thanks, Virginia Glenn (vmatglenn@aol.com)
Wow! That's another exciting project! Congratulations!
Yippee! I'm so excited, because I am itching to get my hands on one of these looms! Please tell me how I can stay informed about the progress of the project. I made a $25 contribution, will my T-shirt come automatically?
Congratulations! Look forward to the updates.
Congratulations Margarita -- looking forward to your progress. Glad I heard your presentation at Version : ) and please keep my updated.
ecstatic!
Congratulations!
What a great time to find this project!
w00ts, to you, to Kickstarter, to the entire open hardware community.
Good work!
Looking forward to seeing this project take off and grow!
congratulations- well done!
Can't wait to see this project fully funded… It's amazing! :)
It's the kind of project that can have a real impact in the world, maybe it's not our direct field of work/interest but we somehow will be able to feel the consequences… This project could make fair trading and equitable commerce much more easy, it has a direct application and deserves to be seen seriously… I fully support this project and I can't wait to hear about all the lives that could be changed thanks to this outstanding idea… An accessible loom that has open plans and where people can build it themselves and improve the design in the way they want… It is a beautiful project! Congrats! :)
Go! Go! Go!
Hello all,
very much looking forward to this get into a real project.
I am really happy to be able to provide substantial support to projects like this! I have had so many people provide support in my business endeavors, I am happy to be able to pass on some of my financial success. I am particularly drawn to this particular project because I teach weaving to young people all the time. I learned to knit when I was 9 years old in 4-H. I can't imagine how hollow my life would be if that person had not volunteers - given of themselves. So, for the past 40 years I have tried to pass on what I know, and I am really happy that I can financial support fiber art projects. And of course I can't wait to see the final product. Stay in touch!
I wish I could have given you greater backing, but it's been a tough, tough couple of years. Best wishes for your project.
