ICEBERG is a short film about Nova, a drummer in a Beijing rock band, who is going to America and falling in love for the first time.
what is ICEBERG?
ICEBERG (冰山) is a short narrative film about a young Chinese rock band shot on location in Beijing in July 2012. Featuring a cast comprised almost entirely of musicians from the Beijing and Shanghai rock scene, ICEBERG is a film that engages the ideas and talents of some of China's most outstanding noisemakers.
ICEBERG is a love story about Nova (LITTLE PUNK), a twenty-two year old dummer in one of Beijing's most beloved rock bands. With her bandmates Lei (WANG XU of THE GAR and WHITE+) and Di Yin (ZHOU NAIREN of BIRDSTRIKING and SKIP SKIP BENBEN), Nova has recently been invited to perform at a music festival in the United States--the band's first experience outside of China. Nova's excitement over her band's new adventure propels her from a performance to a wild party, to a tense meeting with her slightly off-kilter father (ROBERT LIN, SCHOOL OF ROCK). Nova moves through the hazy Beijing summer with a secret--she is falling in love and nothing will ever be the same. In keeping with the themes that have come to characterize so much of Chinese Indie rock, ICEBERG is an exploration of love, friendship, music, and the longing, thrills, and contradictions in the lives of young people.

how you can HELP!
We've got the film in the can, now help us bring it out into the world! Thanks to a grant generously provided by the Four Oaks Foundation, production was completed in July and the shoot was a great success. We want to bring ICEBERG to film festivals and special screenings in China, the US, and beyond...but we need your support!
Your contribution will help with:
--> film scanning and transportation from China to the US
--> color grading and other final technical processing
--> covering festival costs from submission fees to transportation
--> building a website and social media presence that can help us promote the short, the music, and the feature film we hope to make!
ICEBERG is a pilot--a short that will hopefully inspire both creative and financial investment to make a feature film about the band’s first tour in the United States. ICEBERG comes directly from the heart of the Chinese rock world and and is a short that looks and feels like a night at a Beijing rock club: energetic, passionate, a little bit surreal, and full of potential.
ICEBERG presents Beijing as an urban instrument of rebellion, noise, and youth. ICEBERG is a fictional story, but represents a real community shaped by the ideas and experiences of artists making rock and experimental music in today's China. Any contribution will be deeply appreciated and will not only help complete ICEBERG and promote the musicians involved, but will contribute to the future of the feature film!

Making an independent film is never easy. Making an independent film in China...well, let's just say that it requires a certain fanaticism. This is a project that has come to life only because a community of people have believed in the film and given their time, their feedback, and their talent for over a year.
When I started this project, I knew there would be no shortage of crazy obstacles, but so many of the challenges we faced in production were unanticipated and often a little scary. Not knowing if we could obtain and transport 16mm film in mainland China without facing government intervention? Kind of stressful. The heaviest rainstorm in Beijing in sixty years coinciding with our first shooting day? That happened. Managing an international team with very different ideas about production culture and norms? Easier said than done.
But these things all worked out and, though there will be further creative and institutional challenges ahead, ours is a team that is pretty unafraid to rise to the occasion.
We’re not the first international team to shoot an independent film in China, but it's a territory with few established rules. Making and promoting underground film and music in China demands improvisation, caution, and self-awareness. Mostly, though, it demands a community of supporters who will champion not only individual projects, but entire artistic communities in China endeavoring to produce new work and new ideas. That being said, as with every creative project, the ongoing challenge for everyone involved in ICEBERG is to keep focused, stay out of trouble, and make a film that reaches out far beyond its borders.
