Rye Coalition began with five high school friends who bonded through a love of indie/hardcore/punk rock. Rehearsing in their parent’s Jersey City basements and graduating to VFW halls and indie rock clubs (Brownies, Coney Island High, CBGBs, Maxwells), Rye Coalition helped shape the 90’s New Jersey/New York City punk scene. As one of the first bands to develop the new “emo” sound, they were at the forefront of a movement that included Shellac, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker and Karp (with whom they later recorded a legendary 12" split). Rye Coalition’s first recording was a demo cassette tape (1994's "Dancing Man", self-released), backed by an East Coast tour in a beat up schoolbus long before most of them had their driver's license. Over the following 15 years, they recorded with famed engineer Steve Albini and rock maven Dave Grohl, touring relentlessly with everyone from Shellac, Trans Am, Mars Volta, Queens of the Stone Age, The Foo Fighters and many more. Although the band was praised by critics and supported by an absurdly dedicated grassroots fan base, somehow these Jersey rockers never got their due.
ABOUT THE MOVIE
Teeming with incredible musical performances, inherent comedy and more bad luck than any band should have, "Rye Coalition:The Story of the Hard Luck Five" is a hard-stare into the not-so-pretty life of a band desperately trying to realize their rock ‘n’ roll dreams. When they signed to Dreamworks in 2003, Rye’s fans thought they had finally made it. What happened before, during, and after “it” --is this story.
After expending much love, sweat and cash into this project, we were on the path to completing the documentary in ‘06 when we got a major distribution deal. Following in Hard Luck 5 fashion, the company we signed with went bankrupt one week after signing our deal. Saddled with legal debt and maxed out credit cards, we all went back to our day jobs. Now, inspired by the band's incredible reunion performance at Maxwells in 2011 (available on DVD with your pledge on Kickstarter!) we're once again gearing up to give it another go.
Documentarian Jenni Matz combines the band's personally recorded Hi-8 footage with new interviews with Jon Theodore (mars volta), Phil Manley (Trans Am), Jared Warren (karp) and many more (see the complete film credits) for an uncensored view of a rock' n roll band.

RYE COALITION WILL PLAY A ONE-OFF SHOW in your house/town/venue of your design. You book the show (after clearing dates with band). You must also cover travel expenses for the band if they have to fly (outside greater NY/NJ/PA area).
