Update #14: Mr Happy Man is finished!

Posted on March 18, 2011

Hello everyone,

Here we are- one year later and the film is finally complete!

I just finished the final sound mix of Mr. Happy Man at Skywalker Sound yesterday. We had a nine hour session, watching the film over and over and tweaking the audio. There were obvious fixes like levels and EQ, and other fixes that Bob Edwards, my sound mixer, would say "Only you and I will ever hear that." Bob was a perfectionist throughout the whole process and an absolute joy to work with.

I learned a LOT. I had very little knowledge of the technical mumbo jumbo of sound mixing going into this process. Now I know what an LTRT is, why we needed to make a 5.1 surround sound mix instead of a stereo, how sound mixing for theaters and DVDs differs, and that George Lucas also makes tasty olive oil.

The highlight of the visit was being able to screen the film twice at The Stag theater.  The Stag is a 300 seat venue and quite possible the most technologically advanced movie theater in the world, with 31,000 watts of amplification, 10 subwoofers, 5 screen channels and 24 surround speakers.  I also got a fantastically geeky lecture from the projectionist on exactly why the projector was the best in the world (though I'd have difficulty repeating it.)

I'm flying back to Orlando right now, then I'll be flying to Bermuda with Emma (by way of NC) on Sunday and Monday.  Just in time for the premiere on Tuesday!  As soon as I get back from the festival, I'm going to tackle creating the DVD with extra features, deleted scenes, etc so I can get those out to you ASAP!

Lastly, the film continues to be warmly received by film festivals, with official selections from the Nashville Film Festival (which had more than 2,400 submissions this year) and Independent Film Festival Boston.  Both are great festivals and Academy accredited.  Here is the current line up for the film.  Tell any friends or family in these areas to check it out!

Update #12: Florida Film Festival

Posted on January 26, 2011

Hey everyone,

The results from the informal survey are unanimous! The more the better. I'm in agreement here. As a short film, 10 minutes is a great length. But for a DVD, I'm always wanting to see more! I'll try to include as much interesting stuff as I can and will do a lot of filming out in Bermuda.

Also, Mr. Happy Man is an official selection of the 2011 Florida Film Festival! FFF is another festival recognized by the Academy and a personal favorite of mine. Can't wait to screen the film there in April!

We'll be hearing from more festivals in the coming months. I'll keep everyone in the loop!

Best,

Matt
