THE LOWER 9 reveals the displaced culture of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward through memories that fill the abandoned homes of the neighborhood.
ALL DONATIONS ARE 501c3 TAX DEDUCTIBLE through our non-profit fiscal sponsor Common Ground Relief.
GOALS: THE LOWER 9 is the story of a neighborhood
1) THE LOWER 9 will communicate the historical, cultural and familial significance of the Lower Ninth Ward through memories, stories and recollections of longtime residents.
2) THE LOWER 9 will dwell on the abandoned streets, buildings and homes of the neighborhood to reveal the cultural disruption and displacement that occurred as the neighborhood lies vacant of the life it once contained. The world needs to know what was lost in order to understand the importance of bringing it back.
3) THE LOWER 9 will bring support to the Lower Ninth Ward community and to the non-profit organizations supporting its rejuvenation. Once the THE LOWER 9 is complete, the DVD will be used as a fund raising tool for partnered non-profit organizations within the Lower Ninth Ward.
YOUR DONATIONS will go towards the production and post-production phases of the documentary. Filming will take place throughout the Summer months of 2010, during which Filmmakers Matthew Hashiguchi and Elaine McMillion will live and work in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood. Not only will their time be devoted towards the making of this film, but also towards volunteering with the numerous non-profit organizations revitalizing the community. A percentage of your donations will go towards our 501c3 non-profit fiscal sponsor, Common Ground Relief, whom works closely with the Lower Ninth Ward community and its revitalization.
NEW ORLEANS' LOWER NINTH WARD was a culture of generations. It was a unique, tightly knit community where black, white, young and old residents were bound through blood, marriage or camaraderie. Food was bought from the same corner store, porches were meeting places to talk or laugh, and parents regularly communicated with one another about their children.
The destruction of Hurricane Katrina washed away this ease of life and sense of community. Nearly 10,000 residents have been forced from their roots and homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, many of which were owned and inherited, resulting in a displaced culture scattered across the United States. An empty void now overwhelms the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood, as homes, buildings and streets lay vacant of the life it once contained. To truly understand what Hurricane Katrina destroyed, the cultural significance and displacement of the Lower Ninth Ward needs to be expressed.
