ElfSong is a fantasy comic about 3 elves who believe themselves to be the last of their kind, written & illustrated by Mat Nastos.
What is ELFSONG?
As a child, my favorite comics were almost always fantasy oriented: Elfquest by the amazingly talented Wendy Pini, ElfLord by my good friend Barry Blair and the black-and-white Savage Sword of Conan magazines by John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala. Those comics, along with the work of JRR Tolkein, fairy tales and the stories of American Indian and Celtic Mythology from the Choctaw/Scottish side of my family, helped mold and shape the young storyteller in me. The ElfSong comic is the culmination of a dream project for me -- the chance to do my favorite kind of fantasy comic, my way and taking out all of the stops.
ElfSong is the tale of three elves who believe themselves to be the last of their kind as they are forced to face a world much larger, and much more complicated than they ever imagined. Along the way they face ancient magic, a love triangle...oh, and some really big, really scary Vikings! Because you can't have a ripping good story without some of the coolest bad guys around!
If you're a fan of JRR Tolkein, Elfquest, Dragonriders of Pern, Harry Potter, fairy tales, American Indian and Celtic mythology or just darn good stories, then ElfSong is perfect for you.
ElfSong will be released through the critically acclaimed Th3rd World Studios, publishers of the NY Times Best Selling Graphic Novel, Stuff of Legends, in early 2012. I will have the first 4 issues completed before issue 1 ships, and you'll be able to follow along with my progress online with video project journals and art previews.
The new ElfSong series will be written and illustrated by me, Mat Nastos.
What Does the Project Do?
The pledges for the ElfSong Kickstarter project will go to 2 places:
First, to allow me hire a high quality colorist to help bring the project to life. You see, while I am able to write and illustrate a monthly comic on my own, adding in coloring on top of that would wind up killing me -- or making my head explode! And, to be honest, neither one of those things is overly exciting for me! With the addition of a professional colorist, I'll be able to continually produce one of the most beautiful fantasy comics around on a monthly basis!
Second, the funds will help in getting a full-color comic printed and out to the fans. Full color comics have a much high chance at surviving in today's market and, from an artistic point of view, I can't imagine doing the book without those colors!
Please feel free to ask questions here or via email at elvenartist (at) gmail (dot) com. I'll be answering all questions in my weekly video posts here on Kickstarter and on my website! Thanks for stopping by!
The first story arc of ElfSong will run for 5 monthly issues. If things go well in terms of fan interest, the series will continue beyond that. I have a lot of ElfSong stories that I'd love to tell!
Yes, I drew for Elfquest back in the mid-90s...I even lived up in Poughkeepsie and worked out of the Warp offices for a while. To answer the other question, nope, ElfSong has nothing to do with Elfquest beyond me being a huge fan of Wendy Pini's work (and that of Barry Blair). The comic itself owes as much to ElfLord or the old black and white Savage Sword of Conan magazines as it does to Elfquest.
I'm hoping to have the book release in January 2012 in conjunction with the Amazing Arizona Comic Convention (January 6-8, 2012 in Mesa, Az). What that means is the book should solicit out to retailers in October and I will have the first 4 issues ready to go before issue 1 ships.
I put out an ElfSong sketchbook last year and do have a few copies of that left if you email me. You can also pick it up at IndyPlanet.com.
The ElfSong portfolio is something I've wanted to do forever. It is a series of 8 pieces of artwork, printed on high quality archival paper (8.5x11), in black-and-white and carried in a printed envelope. This sort of portfolio was incredibly popular in the 70s, 80s and 90 and I've wanted to do one ever since I came up with the idea to do the comic.
