Today's 'Scarlet Letter' adultresses? Are in a coffee shop chatting about their sex lives. Meet The Red A Club. This is their story.
Hi! I'm Mary McCarthy. (@marymac)
My novel, The Red A Club, is about a group of women in a Maryland town who have one thing in common: they're cheating on their husbands. A nod to the Scarlet Letter, the women call their secret club "The Red A Club" and meet in a local coffee shop to discuss relationships, guidelines for successful affairs, and, of course, how hot the sex is with their lovers.
The novel explores these concepts: Is it time to put away our false puritanical morals and stop acting like everyone gets married and lives happily ever after? Does it make a woman a whore if she finds a way to make herself happy outside her marriage? The novel will be controversial as a result of these questions, but there ya have it. At least we're not still stoning the poor gals.
In order to finish the novel (five chapters are complete and being submitted to literary agencies this week), I plan to spend summer weekends at a writing retreat cottage while my kids are out of school. I would use the Kickstarter money to pay for rental of a creepy, Stephen-King-short-story-worthy isolated writing cottage in order to finish this bitch. (Please send Single Barrel Jack Daniels and Slim Jims. I can finish the novel on that diet.)
I've been a professional writer for nearly two decades (find out more about me here at my blog Pajamas and Coffee), so the writing won't suck. Since I'm primarily a humor writer, the novel will be entertaining. And since I'm mid-life-crisis-level horny, the sex will be hot.
Also, I'm offering all kinds of cool shit for levels of sponsorship- from e-book copies of the novel, postcards, shot glasses and blank journals to a hand-delivered, signed copy. Hell, I'll even make out with you.
Well, I tried to make the funding level $6,666.66, which is two sets of 666's in honor of the women who were burned as witches for adultery in Colonial times. However, Kickstarter rounds up to the nearest whole dollar. So it was listed as $6667 and I changed it to $6666. Now it's randomly just four sixes. Oh well. Anyway, the amount covers the writing retreat cottage for the summer, as well as the rewards offered for the different pledge levels. Thanks for your support!
