4 Days into KickStarter Funding Round – Thoughts and Challenges
Hi guys!
We are 4 days into this funding round with the goal of $4,500. Just over $400 has been pledged, which is approximately 8% of the total goal. Let’s take a look at the current situation, the challenges ahead, and lessons for next time.
Current Situation
After launching, we received a few initial pledges by active KickStarter users browsing the “Recently Launched” category. Once that died down, we received another boost of pledges from friends on Facebook, which bring us to now, at around $400.
Challenges Ahead
While we are still getting trickles of pledges every day, the Slip Stopper project will slowly be moved out of the “Recently Launched” category. This means unless we become very popular, or KickStarter decides to feature us, the organic traffic from active KickStarter users will decrease.
The pledging from our friends will also decrease. I really appreciate the support we’ve received from our friends, especially those who have pledged even though I know our product isn’t in their field of interest. Going forward though, I want to make sure people who pledge are people who are actually interested in using the product, which has 2 important implications.
- The pledge is a reflection of market demand for this product
- People who pledge will receive real value (ie: they will actually use it)
So where will the Slip Stopper project get traffic and marketing from, you might be wondering? Well, that’s something I’m trying to figure out as well. We have been contacting various tech blogs in the hopes of being covered. We have also been testing Facebook advertising, though the conversion hasn’t been profitable.
Lessons for Next Time
We should make sure to build-up excitement and a large following BEFORE launching the KickStarter funding round. This can be done via an email list or social media channels.

Based on the amount of traffic we received and the number of pledges, I am quite confident that Slip Stopper has a niche in this market place. The immediate challenge is to simply get the word out there.
