A graphic novel adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's DAGON by Mark Rudolph.
So What's This?
I'd been looking for a horror project to do for a while, when I came across Dagon, a 6-page short story by H.P. Lovecraft from 1917. Returning to San Francisco, a man is shipwrecked and encounters a place that has him questioning his very sanity and the fate of mankind. Unable to deal with what he's seen, he feels his only choice is suicide, but before he ends his life he recounts his terror in a letter. Lovecraft's prose is sparse, but so visually evocative that I felt compelled to translate it into comics form. The recollective nature of the narrative allowed me to really expand the story visually into over 70 pages and capture the nightmare imagery that Lovecraft hints at so well.
The book is also an experiment to do as much of the art on-the-page as possible and not rely on digital tones or lettering. I ended up using a brush pen for inks and a Copic marker to tone, with the lettering being done by my father in cursive to reflect the narrative device of the letter.
I've been told that Lovecraft is a hard author to adapt faithfully, but have had a lot of encouraging words as to my direction and recorded a show with a Lovecraft scholar about the process here.
As of July 2011, I have 59 pages of art completed and should have the book finished by September with a estimated release date of November.
I'll be using the funding to print, distribute and ship the books.
In the event that funding exceeds the goal of $1,500, I plan on increasing the production values of the printing (paper stock, spot varnish, etc).
INTERNATIONAL PLEDGERS: Please include an additional $7 for shipping.
