About this project
A film project that began as an idea in January 2009, to collect memories and stories from those involved in the Scouting movement since its inception in 1910. Not a timeline, but a purely historical look back to coincide with the 100 year anniversary celebration in 2010. The desire was to capture some of the moments before they were lost forever.
We began by identifying individuals who have had a relationship with Scouting. It was also decided early on that the film would try to capture the essence of what it was like growing up, being part of a Troop, and what that meant then and now. We crafted a series of questions that were open-ended, to get the conversation started. Over time the questions evolved, some were dropped, others were added. But in the end, they only served to gain motion, because the conversations quickly turned to wherever they went. That is what we wanted, nothing scripted, nothing pre-packaged, just simple, honest thoughts and answers. And that is what we got.
We strived to make sure this would not turn into a marketing commercial for the Scouts, in that I think we succeeded. Because in the end, it became a love story. We did not want everything to be perfect, but to show good times and bad. Life is messy. As it proved over the course of the year, a common thread started to emerge without any prompting or sculpting on our part. Scouting had touched them and not because it was an organization. It brought people together and that is where the impact was made, person to person.
To capture the interviews I used the RED One camera and it has proven to be a most excellent way to capture and produce something of lasting value, beauty and worth that should touch the hearts of so many individuals who, like myself, enjoyed their time in Scouting. Having worked as a volunteer for many years, this project has been a labor of love. There is much more work to be done to finish and there are costs necessary to cover to get this finished and BluRay discs made and printed.
We have some very talented folks lined up to assist with the finishing of the film and are almost ready to announce who they are. I'll mention them in the updates.
Yours In Scouting,
Mark
