About this project
This summer I'll be attending the 2011 Clarion West Writer's Workshop, a competitive entry, intensive six-week workshop for writers preparing for professional careers in Science Fiction and Fantasy, held annually in Seattle, Washington. I'm planning on collecting the best of fiction and essays I generate at the workshop (~six pieces) and self-publishing them in a book tentatively titled: Other Possibilities.
The selected pieces will be multi-genre, reflecting the changing line-up of best-selling author-instructors at Clarion West: Charles Stross, Nancy Kress, Paul Park, Margo Lanagan, Minister Faust, and L. Timmel Duchamp; as well as my personal range of topics, interests, and inspirations:
- Even in a post-scarcity utopia humans manage to find plenty of reasons to feud, gripe, and fight.
- In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, a small town, down a forgotten road, takes advantage of the chaos.
- On the other side, an entity made of stolen memories imagines itself in our world, and tries to find the off switch.
All funds collected will be used for design, publication, and writing costs to complete the project.
As a Creative Commons Copyleftist (By-NC-SA) I will be maintaining periodic (if infrequent during the Workshop) updates of the project's progress on my personal blog and posting all my work from Clarion for download for supporters, and the world, to review, reuse, and remix as anyone sees fit.
