With less than a month to prepare, one woman sets out to write, rehearse, and perform a one hour adaptation of The Cherry Orchard.
Wait, what happened?
A collaboration of dancers/designers/writers/etc were working with me to develop a one hour adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard for the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I found a venue for the piece, invested savings in the festival and venue fees and was geared up to take the show over the pond. We had a successful workshop and showing, and were in our first rehearsals when, one fateful day, the whole team vanished into thin air.
Now, with less than a month to go before the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Launch, I am going to build, rehearse, and ultimately perform the one woman version of The Cherry Orchard with the help of my blessed Stage Manager Aislinn Curry (an avid coffee drinker) and numerous other collaborators who, thankfully, still exist in time and space. drop it [v2.0] is a gritty, country song of a show that smashes Chekhov's tale right up next to the story I know most intimately: my own. Bones will be rattled. Cherries will be popped. Estates will be lost. It's going to be one bangin' party!
Creation of the show is underway here in The Emerald City NOW. Thanks to a residency at Smoke Farm, July 16th-22nd, it will be refined, rehearsed, and perfected in Arlington, WA. I hope to have a showing of the final piece in Seattle before jetting back to NYC for a brief stop and then, ultimately, taking the show to The Fringe.
drop it [v2.0] serves as a reminder to all of us (me especially!) that we are made up of more than our mementos. This show is a tongue in cheek labor of love, an ode to my father and the crazy estate he left me with, a middle finger to the bank that loomed over us as we sorted through his things, and an apology to whomever ended up buying his estate at auction.
Here's where Kickstarter comes in! While I once had a whole team of people to help raise spread the word and raise funds, I am now flying by the seat of my pants with a rather hefty budget under my belt. I estimate with materials, venue fees, registration fees, accommodation, and airfare, the total cost of production is going to be close to $8,000! I am in it to win it, balls to the wall...
