AMPERSAND: A ROMEO & JULIET STORY has been selected for the New York Fringe Festival! Help us pay for it!
The great news: Mariah MacCarthy's queer pop-folk musical Ampersand: A Romeo & Juliet Story has been accepted to the New York International Fringe Festival! This is HUGE for Purple Rep and we are so excited to give this baby her official coming-out party! New York Fringe is August 12-28 (our dates: Fri 8/12 @ 5, Sun 8/14 @ 8:15, Thu 8/18 @ 2, Sat 8/20 @ noon, Sat 8/27 @ 7:45). We'll be in the Ellen Stewart Theatre at La MaMa and we absolutely cannot wait.

A prissy Beauty Queen falls in love/hate with a guitar-wielding firebrand. Is there room for this bad romance in Verona, Iowa? Or will Juliet stay in her walk-in closet? An award-winning pop-folk musical, with drag queens.

This musical has been developed over the course of two workshops--one of each act--at the Looking Glass Theater, where it racked up a grand total of twenty Looking Glass Forum Awards, including Best Production for both workshops. The New York Fringe Festival will be the first time that both acts will be presented together.
The less-great news: We have to pay for it. We have eleven cast members to clothe, including some fierce politician drag queens. We have rehearsal space to rent, especially in light of the uber-sexy choreography that our actors will have to learn. We have a set to build and fireproof, and we have to transport it to and from the venue at every performance. And we have a BIG venue, which means lots of seats to fill, which means we need to get the word out as much as possible. It all adds up. Our $3,000 goal will cover less than half of our budget.
Please watch the video, get to know the amazing (and charming, and good-looking) people involved in this project, and consider helping us make this possible. If you're not able to give, please consider spreading the word--post this campaign on facebook, twitter, myspace if you wanna go old-school, whatever.
