Folk is a great poster font, but it lacks a lowercase. Let’s complete it!
The origins of the Folk typeface project are in the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Urban confusion. Initially made for a poster, I saw in that first start there was the potential for a typeface that could recall the feelings of the writing used day-to-day in my city’s informal communication.
In my design process I treated each 'error' as a 'hit,' to form a set of glyphs that fit together in a natural manner. That is the greatest quality of Folk, and perhaps one reason it has been used by a large number of people already: The fonts evoke a doodle on notebook, a sale poster at the supermarket, or one at the science fair.
The Folk font family is composed of 4 styles:
- Solid
- Shadow
- Outline
- Sketches

The idea is to combine the main typeface, Solid, with the other fonts, to create different outlines. With just its uppercase Folk has already become popular, used by Mozilla, the IFC film channel and Urban Outfitters - but it lacks the lowercase letters and other symbols needed for most typographic situations.
Use It In Print
Folk is an excellent display type that makes an impact when used in sizes above 70pt. For designers it can be fun to match the styles when making big headlines and posters.
It is also readable in paragraph settings, and this Kickstarter project to add a lowercase will bring balance and lightness that the current version so badly needs.
With four different styles, Folk can provide websites an interesting and fun typographic experience.
When combining their styles, you can unleash your creativity, experiencing the feeling of writing with an authentic hand-made typeface.
Use It On The Web
The Folk Project has received the full support of the Google Web Fonts team, and if this project reaches its funding goals it will be published in Google Web Fonts - www.google.com/webfonts
Folk has been distributed without a fee for 4 years, and has a great following thanks to both its existing technical quality as well as its design. With the completion of the design of the lowercase glyphs, Folk become a complete typeface and will provide to users around the world a choice for a hand made typography with lots of fun and personality.
It will be published under the SIL Open Font License, a free, libre and open source license that allows all designers to use, study, customize and contribute to the fonts!
The Google Web Fonts experts will also review its technical details to ensure it works perfectly as a web font, and it will be hand-hinted by Google.
This project will take 2 months.
At the end of the first month, Folk Solid will have a lowercase and all other glyphs required by Google Web Fonts for 'Basic Latin.'
At the end of the second month, the whole family will have this character set and the Project Rewards will be sent out.
Please note that this project’s funds are paid to ‘TeX Users Group’ (office@tug.org), a US based 501(c)3 non-profit, who are kindly running a ‘Libre Font Fund.’
