Update #10: Submissions for the penultimate story

Posted on March 3, 2010

I've been trying to figure out what to do with Story #5, the penultimate story (beyond the obvious inclusion of the word "penultimate").

There are two factors at play - the first being that I already know what I want to do with Story #6. It's going to be epic, in a very literal sense of the word. Like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars and The Odyssey and (#nerdalert) Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series but EVEN MORE EPIC. Expect not only a grand scale, but also some familiar faces/settings/etc from earlier stories. The second factor for Story #5 is that I'm a little worn out! Writing a story every week (and working a full time job) has really been taking it out of me. And with a marathon next week, I want to save my strength. So this what I'm thinking: Story #5, the penultimate story, is going to be SHORT. "Fever Pitches", the shortest yet, came in at about 4100 words. This one is going to be under 2000. (Eek!)

What does this mean for The Collective? Make your entries short and punchy. If you can do it in a word, that's perfect. If you need more than one, use them sparingly.

And get ready for the final story - start thinking big!

I'm a media-creator and journalist. I've been trying to write novels since I was five years old (Hardy Boys: Case of the Pirate Treasure) but I just finished my very first one (The Collective). When I'm not excitedly hammering out first drafts or slogging through re-writes, I do online news for San Francisco-based Current TV.
