On September 8, 2012, a small crew of cultural conquistadors will embark on an expedition. These travelers seek physical, psychological and spiritual metamorphosis. The event will take place at Machine Project over several hours. But before we embark, we need some expensive stuff. $1300 worth of Jamón ibérico, to be precise, the finest ham in Spain.

The Cabeza Debacle is inspired by the story of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca’s voyage from Spain to North America in the 16th Century. Conquistador, slave, shaman, the man experienced, quite possibly, the greatest human transformation in the history of our species.  

The central event in the Cabeza Debacle will be a communal reading, out loud, of an english translation of La Relación, De Vaca’s account of his journey as told to the king of Spain. As we read this incredible text we will pause to partake in the following activities: 

A group weeping and laughter ceremony. 

A clothing optional screening of the 1991 feature film Cabeza De Vaca, hosted by the president of a Los Angeles naturist group. 

A ham bar, featuring Jamón ibérico alongside Spanish cheeses. 

We will also be accompanied by special guests throughout the night.
