About this project
The Story So Far...
Abe Lincoln paused, wiped the sweat from his brow, then popped the exit hatch to his steam-powered robot. Fresh air and silence greeted him as he poked his head out.
"Welcome, Mister President!"
With a yelp, Lincoln ducked back inside and slammed the hatch shut. John Wilkes Booth had found him! The crazed thespian and his henchmen had been chasing him for hours.
But no! It was the Bronte sisters in a three-headed, six-armed, gothic robot. It had a spear in one hand that looked remarkably like a writing quill.
Lincoln hefted his axe, The Emancipator, and glowered at the sisters. This was about to get ugly.
Let's Make Better Facebook Games
We're creating Mustache Mercenaries - a game of giant robot combat where all your pilots are historical figures like Abe Lincoln and Laura Ingalls Wilder. It combines turn-based battles with completely configurable steam-powered robots.
Why are we doing this? Because it is a crazy and fun idea, and because we think social games need a lot more crazy and fun.
Right now, social games are under a lot of fire. Many people see the popular ones as boring click-fests that only exist to suck money out of your pocket. In a lot of cases, they're right. We want you to help us change that.
Why We Need Your Help
We started working on Mustache Mercenaries in June, and created a working prototype in one month with one programmer. Over the following three months, our team of four got the game released to Beta. You can play it for free at www.mustachemercenaries.com (takes you to Facebook).
We raised money from our friends and family to get this far, but to get the game over the finish line, we need a little more gas in the tank. The money we're raising would give us time to get several key features and a lot of polish into the game, as well as the ability to get the word out to people about it. Our goal is to use this money to get the game to a spot where it can support the company.
Our future plans for the game include adding Survival Mode (How long can you hold out against the Bronte sisters? What if we add Mark Twain into the mix?), a crafting system, the ability for players to gift each other with rare robot parts, bug fixes and polish, and a lot more.
Why Social Games?
We think that the social games space is a big frontier that most traditional game developers aren't exploring because of its bad reputation. We've come to believe that social games could become an amazing next step in the evolution of games, and we want to be a part of that process.
The whole social games phenomena is going to evolve greatly over the next several years - both the platforms (like Facebook) and the games on them. But while the bigger companies are focused mainly on making whatever game earns the most money, we want to focus on really pushing the creative boundaries of social games .
Who We Are
Macguffin Games is Joe Freemer (design), Graham Sternberg (art), Justin Rounds (coding), and Scott Macmillan (everything else).
We've been making games a total of almost 20 years between the bunch of us, and have shipped 9 titles. We've worked on everything from small indie titles (All Heroes Die) to multi-million copy selling franchises (Zoo Tycoon). Right now, we're living on the cheap and trying to make Mustache Mercenaries something worth remembering.
