Funding for the remastered reissue of 'Canto' - the seminal album of highly original works for solo prepared guitar - will come from you!
"I enjoyed it!" - Derek Bailey, guitarist (about the original issue of 'Canto')
Have you ever wanted to play an invaluable role in the output of a creative musician? Now's your chance! This project's funding will help defray costs associated with remastering and reissuing my first commercially released album, 'Canto,' which is currently out of print. Let me explain...
After being thoroughly educated in a university music school, I was having a bit of a musical identity crisis. I didn't really feel like the music I was trying to play was very honest or even something of my generation. Part of me felt that I was stuck trying to recreate someone else's craft and was having a hard time seeing the personal contribution that I always thought should be such an important part of music. So, I packed up my things and moved back to Western Massachusetts for a spell. While ensconced in this area, I wasn't playing the guitar much at first, and when I decided that the time was right to recommit myself, I started improvising in a different way from how I had been. I ended up developing a set of personal constructs and concepts that gave me more satisfaction toward finding my own 'voice.' Some of this was aided by my own preparations to the instrument (attaching foreign objects to summon non-traditional sounds). Of course, many people have used preparations on their instruments before, and, yes, many have improvised music. However, this is an important project in my musical development because it is the documentation of my realization of what it means to play, improvise and contribute in an honest and personally relevant way. I would like all of you to be able to hear it. Click the video to listen to an unmastered track from the original issue!
This was recorded acoustically with no overdubbing around midnight in a beautifully converted church space in Greenfield, MA. The sound is really great. The original issue of 'Canto" was an unmastered CDR on the now defunct NJ label, 'Optical Sounds.' Remastering the project will bring out the full depth of these recordings, adding priceless audio quality.
Please look through the different levels of support and the related offers next to the funding level you choose. Thank you very much for your contribution and I look forward to sharing this music with you!
