About this project

In the summer of 2010, Denver will be launching the first Biennial of the Americas, with artistic director Bruce Mau. (For more information go to ingoodwetrust2010.com). As of Sept, 2009, it’s still unclear whether any funding will be available through the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs for local artist’s installations, with only 9 months to go until the biennial opens. I believe the people of Denver want their homegrown talent to have a chance to shine alongside artists from around the world. I believe that it’s time for artists to take matters into their own hands. Which is why I’m asking for your help.

As far as I know, this would be the first public art installation funded directly by the public, with no middle-man! I would like to do an installation in public trees in downtown Denver (the 16th Street Mall is my first choice; still negotiating locations) that explores the issue of GMO foods and transgenic mutations. Entitled “Strange Fruit”, the sculptures imagine a future in which the plants around us might sprout eyes or snouts. My recent work has explored transgenic mutations in animals, resulting in fanciful beasts that walk the line between beautiful and creepy. To see more of my work, please go to http://www.lynnxe.com. To see updates and sketches about the project, please see http://www.strangefruit2010.blogspot.com.

I am trying to raise $10,000 for this project. The amount I am raising is ONLY the expense of the materials, equipment rental for installation, and to employ an assistant. The actual realistic expenses I am estimating are $13,980, not including any pay for myself or any other overhead such as studio rental. This work will be a labor of love for me, and hopefully I will be able to “pay” myself by selling the works. I believe that artists and galleries give a gift to the community: They provide free spaces for the public to view art, and artists often toil for years without making money. This is potentially a new model: similar to public radio, It’s a very direct patronage of the arts; each person is like one of the Medicis.

I propose an exhibition of 10 – 20 sculptures that will be installed in the trees within Civic Center Park during the 2010 Biennial of the Americas. The sculptures will be a point of discovery for the viewers, hidden amongst the leaves of the trees in some cases, hanging as extra limbs in others. The sculptures seek to pose questions, as opposed to being didactic or giving an opinion…they only ask, “what if”.
