We explore the rules of nature through play and design. PRISMA: a game, a chess set, a geometric puzzle.
Hello, we are LUPE a group of designers, architects, artists, friends and parents. We design games and toys that are inspired by the enormous variety of shapes that make up the natural world-games that explore the rules that help create them.
Lupe toys was born out of a vibrant scene of Mexico City artists, architects and friends from different disciplines and it's all about collaborating and learning from each other's talents. Mateo is an architect and Fernando and Enrique are both designers, together we are working with young, local artists Pia Camil and Jose Leon Cerrillo on our first project, PRISMA.
With your help, we hope to share the awe and curiosity we have about nature with everyone who uses our toys.
We are proud to say that PRISMA is ready to be taken into production.
PRISMA is a Chess Set and a Puzzle. The solved puzzle forms a solid block made from the board and pieces of a chess set.
The design was inspired by the geometric beauty of minerals. As from one chess match to another, each stone in the set has a resemblance to the next: they acknowledge a common origin, but each is entirely unique.
A lot of thought and work went into designing PRISMA:
- We went through numerous variations of the design, exploring the form while ensuring not to interfere with the clarity of the game.
- We searched for ways to differentiate the hierarchy of the pieces so that it would not be confusing to tell the queen from the king or the knight from the bishop.
- We looked for shapes that would make beautiful objects, both individually and when pieced together.
- We studied color to make it appealing to adults but playful enough to invite kids as well.
- We checked that each piece remains stable when handled and has a good weight on the board.
- We studied materials, sizes and textures.
- We made sure to design a puzzle that could be challenging but not so much as to discourage people from putting the pieces back together after a game is finished.
Designing PRISMA has been a fantastic experience. After many months, experiments, drawings and models, we are very happy with the product we have designed and are ready for the next step.
Why we need your help:
We want to make the best possible product. This means making 3D printed prototypes of every detail to ensure that when it ships to production there is nothing left to improve. The model needs to go back and forth between the product engineers and the designers and multiple attempts are needed to make sure the molds are ready. We will then make molds out of silicon for a final prototype that we will use for making the aluminum molds needed for large scale production. This is an expensive process and your help will see us through it.
We love PRISMA and really believe that people will love it too. Please helps us get it out into the world.

Taking any complex project into productions presents great challenges. Prisma is no exception.
One of the issues we face is the time it takes to print a single Prisma set. There are 32 pieces and a large box to print out for each set. We have taken into account long hours of printing and have come up with what we think is the most efficient way to go about the problem, but any glitches with hardware or software could set us back.
Also, if the demand for Prisma is larger than we anticipated (we hope so!) we may need to skip right into designing the prototype for large scale productions and send our backers an aluminum mold injected Prisma set instead of the 3D printed version we have offered them (so much better! but it does take a little longer...).
