About this project
Here's the deal. My friends Ryan and Brad (AKA Pierce P to some) are in Brooklyn working on an AWESOME project that's part painting and part video game. They're currently raising funds on Kickstarter here: http://kck.st/kiYYb2.
If we collect $1,500 then Ryan will make us a big, awesome oil painting of any 2 characters doing battle in any environment. And from there Brad will turn the painting into a playable game, ala Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, etc.
So basically we're collecting money on Kickstarter to put into another Kickstarter to commission a fantastic piece of art for Detroit. A little inter-city collaboration.
[UPDATE 1: Ryan's mom has pledged to the project and writes:
"Pledging $500 in the name of Rodes Walters, the artist, Ryan Ford's grandfather, who worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit for 42 years. Would love to see his grandson's work include something that represents the auto industry that supported his family of eight children, 33 grandchildren and too many to count great grandchildren. Not to mention the name connection. Sorry Ryan Ford no relation to Henry I'm afraid."
Too cool!]
[UPDATE 2: Registered detroitvspainting.com for the game to live at]
[UPDATE 3: Locked down the musician to score the game]
The Rules:
The painting will be set in Detroit and the characters will be Detroit-based characters. When the painting is complete I would like us to donate it to the city or a Detroit gallery, museum, or other institution.
Here's the catch and the fun part: I don't know what the best setting and best characters are. Really, in the world of all things, there never is an absolute best. There are options, and the options eventually whittle down to choice. Options range from silly to profound, timeless to contemporary, abstract to tangible, whimsical to political.
If you back this project you're invited to brainstorm and share ideas for:
• The Detroit backdrop
• The battling characters
• The painting's future home
We'll package up everyone's ideas as collective guidance for Ryan and Brad, and they'll make the final call as artists on which elements to include.
So go ahead, please back the project and comment with your ideas. And if you're in another city or have a different concept, by all means we encourage you to post your own meta Kickstarter for your own playable painting. Most importantly, support Ryan and Brad's project either here or on their official page: http://kck.st/kiYYb2.
Good luck, peace, and have fun!
