Bell and Whistle, a small bakery, wants to turn a vintage camping trailer into a traveling gluten free commercial kitchen.
Started in the spring of 2010, Bell and Whistle is a woman-owned operation in State College, Pennsylvania making artisanal baked goods and ice cream to sell at local farmer's markets and through local businesses. Over the summer of 2010, we gained a reputation for delicious food with a local twist, using seasonal local produce to enhance our flavors, and for our gluten free and vegan options- not to mention our colorful macarons. Until now, I have operated out of rented space in a friend's cafe. Soon, however, that restaurant will close and leave Bell and Whistle homeless. Rather than find space in another kitchen, I'd like to become independent!
At the end of the last market season, owner Louisa Smith (that's me) bought a vintage camping trailer: a 10 foot long, 1961 Ionia-a-Home, a brand so tiny it's virtually unknown. That seemed appropriate! At first it was intended to be a mobile farmer's market stall to maximize appeal and minimize setup time, with an eye toward turning it into a kitchen in the future. Now, though, it is Bell and Whistle's best option for independence. Best of all, it will be a dedicated gluten free space, something that will keep my customers with allergies safer and offer me entry into a growing market.
What the trailer needs is simple: it needs equipment, workspaces, and a little sprucing up. That's where you come in. Pledge today and help me get the kitchen up on its wheels!
