A durational performance and installation by Loo Zihan
About the Exhibition
On 1 January 1994 Singaporean artist Josef Ng performed Brother Cane, a performance that triggered a ten-year restriction for the licensing and funding of performance art in Singapore.
On 19 February 2012 I presented six testimonials of Josef Ng’s performance in a performance titled Cane at The Substation Theatre. These testimonials included a ‘live’ re-enactment of Brother Cane, an eyewitness account, video documentation of the 1994 performance, and excerpts from press clippings among others.
You can learn more about a detailed timeline of events surrounding both Brother Cane and Cane from the Facebook page here.
Video Documentation from the performance of Cane (Singapore, 2012), presented as part of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival.
Archiving Cane is a solo exhibition that grew out of a desire to critically examine my performance of Cane. It is a way of consolidating materials and objects accumulated in my yearlong research into the body of work by Josef Ng for a public presentation.
This exhibition and durational performance is an attempt to investigate alternative modes of archiving, presenting and performance and to extend the conversation beyond the performance space.
The exhibition will take place from 7 to 16 December 2012 at The Substation Gallery (45 Armenian Street, Singapore 179936).
About the Durational Performance Component of 'Archiving Cane'
“In privileging an understanding of performance as a refusal to remain, do we ignore other ways of knowing, other modes of remembering, that might be situated precisely in the ways in which performance remains, but remains differently?” – Rebecca Schneider, Archive Performance Remains
I will be performing a durational and relational artwork titled Performing Remains from 7 December to 16 December 2012 from 12 till 9pm daily as part of the exhibition.
Members of the public are invited to provide their account of Brother Cane and / or Cane as part of this performance. They can contribute by providing artifacts related to these performances for photo or video documentation in the gallery space. These contributions can be actual or fictional artifacts from the performances and the events surrounding them. In addition they will be invited to record an oral or written account of how these artifacts personally relate to Brother Cane and / or Cane.
These accounts will be compiled and presented as an online archive after the conclusion of the exhibition.
About the Perks
As part of the exhibition and performance, I am compiling an exhibition booklet which will contain information about the exhibition, the artifacts on display along with a couple of commissioned essays from Singaporean art writers and critics. This 120-page A5 booklet is designed as an essential companion piece to the exhibition. Each booklet will be serialized and there will be a limited print run.
The six 4R photos will be printed on standard photo paper and are meant as souvenirs in appreciation of your donation to the campaign. The photos are documented by Singaporean artist-photographer Samantha Tio.
In the February performance of Cane, twelve ceramic tiles were used as part of the performance props. These tiles are now offered as rewards for your Kickstarter donation. As you would have noticed from the video documentation, two of these twelve tiles were broken during the performance due to the impact from the cane strokes. The rest of the ten tiles are intact. All tiles will be signed by the artist and you can request for a personalized message to be added onto them when you claim your reward.
These pair of fine art prints were first exhibited as part of the Singapore Survey 2012: New Strange Faces show at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Singapore. They are documentation of two scars on my body. The first inflicted by the cigarette butt stubbed out against my arm during the re-enactment of Brother Cane. The second scar is a chancre scar.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I am extremely grateful that The Substation has kindly sponsored use of their exhibition gallery and TRIPPLE has offered their design services pro-bono.
Unfortunately, I have been notified that I am unsuccessful in my application for the National Arts Council Presentation and Promotion Grant.
The amount you are donating will go towards covering the costs of staging the exhibition, namely equipment rental and exhibition design. Some of these big-ticket items includes:
1. Rental for a photocopy machine to be installed in the gallery space as part of the durational performance. (Minimum $500 for two weeks)
2. Rental of televisions to display video documentation ($1000 for two televisions and sound system)
3. Construction of exhibition display ($1200 for tables, pedestals and light fixtures)
4. Printing of exhibition flyers, posters and booklet covers ($1000)
Your contribution will also help to pay for manpower during the exhibition setup and a reasonable compensation for my exhibition manager who has been tirelessly sorting out the logistics for the exhibition.
I am self-funding the exhibition and the total sum raised from Kickstarter will help to offset my expenditure. I will be willing to send a detailed breakdown of the final expenditure to backers who request for it after the conclusion of the exhibition.
In the event that we fail to meet our Kickstarter target, the exhibition will still go on, but the scale of the project will be reduced with significant compromises made to the concept and execution of the work.
If you believe in my research and practice thus far, along with the re-presentation of this significant moment in Singaporean performance-art history, please support the project and help spread the word.
