About this project
"Loft in the Red Zone”, is an artist organized tribute to 9/11 that opened at the Historic JP Morgan building at 23 Wall Street on September 9th, 2011. This exhibition is a conceptual group show honoring the victims, first responders and the people of New York City.
The opening reception on September 9th, with over 400 in attendance, offered an autonomous space and opportunity for friends and families of victims to reflect. During the week of September 11th, there were more than 100 visitors per day throughout the week. On September 16th, barricades were put up along Wall Street in response to the ongoing protests (Occupy Wall Street,) and our exhibition was in effect “occupied” due to our location in the heart of the protests. Public and press access was severely restricted into the area, and Federal Hall, as well as, the New York Stock Exchange became among the most high security locations in the United States. Beginning Saturday September 17, the weekend became restricted to any public access besides immediate neighbors and employees. Opening for business on Monday, the rest of the public, including tourists and visitors, were put into a maze of barricades and checkpoints in order to reach our exhibition. The police stated that the barricades would most likely be put down at the end of the week, but at this present time, they remain standing.
With these ongoing political protests, we have been immediately impacted as an exhibition trying to hold a proper tribute to 9/11. We see our exhibition as a neighborhood site, oriented towards providing an artistic and reflective space for both locals and tourists. We need to raise enough money to keep the exhibition open for the month of October. As of now, we only have the space until the 30th of September and we believe that we have not had enough time to show our exhibition to the public due to what’s been occurring on Wall Street. With that said, we will hold a special fundraising event on September 29th from 7pm to 10pm with additional cultural fundraising events in October, given we meet or goal. There will be a silent auction on the 29th of the artwork in our gallery and will be catered by restaurant Mari Vanna. Please save the date.
Loft in the Red Zone is a pop-up art show and not an institutionally funded exhibit.
