About this project

Hello Internetsphere!

I'm excited to be starting production for Topographies, my second album! It's been two and a half years since recording my first album, Red Flags (still on iTunes...), and I'm extremely happy to be spending some time with my dear friend and cellist man Dan Zamzow of Deep Sea Productions in Minneapolis to record this new record.

The new project is going to be a collection of songs that express my relationships to "terrains" of all sorts. I wrote many of these songs during the transition between leaving the Midwest two years ago for grad school and discovering the Pacific Northwest. Many of the songs are about my nostalgia for the terrain of Minnesota and Iowa, my experience of falling in love with the mountains of Washington, and my experiences with the expansive and diverse terrains of love and human relationships. I can't wait for you to hear these new songs--these Topographies!

Over the next few weeks, Dan and I will be in the thick of creating this record. We start recording on August 1st. I've been playing some of these songs in Spokane over the past two years, but some of them are shiny brand new.

I'm asking for some support in making this record because it's not free to record and distribute an album. In order to supplement the cost, I'm asking for $1,000 here on Kickstarter. To a girl who just graduated from grad school, got her purse stolen, and then her car stolen (all last month), this seems like a lot of money. But my goal is actually pretty conservative, considering that the actual cost of this record is going to be at least twice that amount. With recording, production, mixing, mastering, distribution, and promotion costs all piling up, a thousand bucks only goes so far. I have some money saved up for this project, so my goal is to supplement with this Kickstarter campaign as best I can! If the goal of $1,000 is met and you still want to contribute, by all means, please do! I'm asking for a specified amount because Kickstarter requires me to meet the goal before I get any of the moolah you pledge. If I don't meet the goal, I don't get any money, and you don't get charged. But if I exceed the goal, I get to keep it!

No amount is too little. If you can only contribute one dollar, that's fine by me. Every dollar helps! But if you can contribute more, think of it as investing in the project. Plus, starting at $15 pledges, you get something in return--so in some ways, it's like you're just pre-ordering the album!

If you'd like to check out my music pre-Kickstarter, you can peruse my website, which was designed by the talented Bethany DeLine, a friend and also a contributor to my musical career.

Thanks to Rajah Bose for helping me with the video for this project. Doesn't the video look great?

Okay, Internets, thanks for reading and thanks for contributing to the making of Topographies. This is going to be an amazing experience, and I'm sincerely excited to make this record.

  • Nobody knows. It got stolen the day before I was supposed to drive from Spokane to Minneapolis to start pre-production for this album. Thank goodness for my family, who generously chipped in to buy me a plane ticket. But if you see this car driving around (http://www.youtube.com/watch...), call the police.

Liz Rognes

Has not connected their Facebook account.

Originally from Iowa, Liz Rognes is a singer/songwriter and multi-genre artist currently based in Spokane, Washington. Classically trained as a soprano, Liz started writing and singing folk songs in college and fell in love with the idea of singing about her trouble. Her songs range from playfully flirtatious to introspective to string-busting energetic. Liz worked closely with her friend and producer Dan Zamzow of Deep Sea Productions to create her first album, Red Flags, in 2009, which quickly sold out. Liz re-released the record in Spokane in 2010, with the cover artistry of Bethany DeLine. A follow-up to Red Flags is percolating, but meanwhile, Liz continues cultivating her loves for vermiposting, vegan cooking, thinking, and teaching.
