Graphoscope is a mobile photo booth and photobook project, by award winning steampunk photographer Lex Machina.
All right, not really, but I would like to dress up like a crazy time travelling Victorian and bark this proposition at throngs of my fellow oddballs in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, they'll be brave enough to enter my photo booth and make some awesome with me. Perhaps even some steampunk awesome?
Historically, graphoscopes were 19th century devices used in parlors in order to enhance the viewing of photographs and text. The Graphoscope Travelling Photographic Dispensary aims to enhance the portraiture experience, by creating an immersive sitting environment and unique souvenir prints. Sitters will receive heirloom photographs and hand crafted photo mementos from a time that never was.
Graphoscope is a project that I've been working on for about 3 years now. I've been doing similar portraiture for various small projects in that time and now I'd like to take this work much farther.
This project specifically will use research and experience perfecting digital methodologies for recreating the look of individual photos from my antique collection in recording the patrons of counter-culture events, like conventions, for posterity. It will also generate prints, stereoviews, mounted cabinet cards, and other modern relics, available to the patronage and supporters, and finally, in 2012 a photo book of the most interesting photos from the project will be released.

As an added bonus, Lastwear, a Kickstarter launched open source clothing company in Seattle, have partnered with me to outfit a select few higher prize level backers in Pinkerton or Teasedale vests and Steeplejacks or Cargo Hakama
The modest goal amount of $2000 will pay for materials for mounted prints, digital storage, booth backdrops and props (including a steampunk camera case-mod) as well as initial publishing costs for the book. In reality, I will probably eat a lot of the cost.
Everything above and beyond the goal makes this project better, and increases the chance that it will live on as a sucessful side business.
Your generosity will allow me to purchase more equipment and better materials, as well as help cover travel to a few 2011 or 2012 events which I might otherwise be unable to attend.
So if you would like to see the Graphoscope Travelling Photographic Dispensary in your neighborhood, I'd appreciate it if you pad your prize level pledge with a few extra dollars for batteries and fuel.
If successfully Kickstarted, this will become a perpetual creative project that lives in Detroit and travels repeatedly each year, perhaps to your town. There will be more portraits, more books, and more fun. In otherwords, a dream come true for me. A small, but important dream. Thanks again, for your support in all that I do. I truly hope you decide to contribute!
