A clothing line with a mission-to empower girls who may feel insecure about having a darker skin complexion to feel comfortable and con
I need YOUR help to launch my tee shirt line which will be called 'FBG: Inspirational Apparel'!
After the first run of women's junior tees were received so well, I began getting requests for tanks, children's sizes as well as a version for men! It is all very overwhelming but extremely exciting at the same time!
The first T-Shirt the line will feature is the "I Love My Shade" tee. It is to encourage whoever wears the shirt to love and embrace the skin they're in.
I have other designs sketched and written down as well and am excited to grow the line and show them to you all!
With the funds raised, I will be able to:
1) Produce more "I Love My Shade' Tees & well as debut two new designs.
2) Produce women's tees/tank tops, young girls versions, as well as a men's version of the tee.
3) Have an official photo shoot representing different shades of girls to showcase the new "I Love My Shade' line! **Shot by the wonderful Juanita Thompson**
All in all, me being able to launch my own clothing line would be an absolute dream come true as well as help me bring awareness to my site + blog. I anticipate with my growing business I will be able to start FBG meet-ups, travel to speak to/mentor young girls & spread the word about FBG.
I anticipate my line of "Inspirational Apparel" will indeed inspire girls to be themselves, love themselves, and encourage others to do the same!:) Thank You!
About Me + FBG
My name is Kay! I am a 20 year old college student, aspiring entrepreneur + writer! I created FBG in June 2011 to reach out to girls who may be effected by colorism. I want to encourage girls who may feel insecure about their darker complexion to love and embrace their skin!

TEEN DIARIES: What do you hope to achieve with your site/brand?
KW: I want to encourage all girls of a darker complexion to feel comfortable and confident in their skin. I want ‘FBG’ to be a catalyst for change encouraging self-love and instilling pride in one’s skin complexion. The “movement’s goal will be for new generations of dark skinned girls to not even have one thought of wishing to be lighter, to never doubt their beauty. My hope is for this “issue” to eventually be virtually nonexistent, but it does start with us. I’m also hoping I can do my part and make a change to where, dark skinned girls know they are beautiful no matter what anyone says. I am also working on launching a t-shirt line to further enforce these ideas, empowering women and promoting self-love messages.

CL: At College Lifestyles we started the Beauty by Confidence Campaign earlier this year to show young women that beauty comes in a variety of packages. What is your definition of beauty?
KW: “I think beauty is the person you are inside and it radiates most when you are comfortable in your skin. I think beauty shines most bright when you are positive, happy, and genuinely kind to others. It shows through your heart and radiates in your smile.”

MN: Is your site just for black girls, or other racial groups such as Afro Latinas, South Asians, Middle Eastern women, etc?
KW: For the most part, the content is geared toward black girls, because I am one, and that is how I am relating my experiences. But, I realize the effect colorism has on brown girls of other ethnicities and cultures. I make sure to post articles and pictures relating to other ethnicities that are affected by colorism as well. While I don’t specifically address them all the time, the message is universally the same: To love and accept yourself, because you are beautifully and wonderfully made. They too have possibly had thoughts of wishing have a lighter complexion to fit society’s idea of beauty. I hope to help young girls and women overcome their insecurities. I’ve interviewed one young lady of Indian descent and interacted through the blog with a few others as well. Running the blog gives me the opportunity to learn every day so I do welcome others to share their thoughts and experiences with colorism. The purpose of this blog is to not to discriminate but to uplift and encourage, empower girls to be confident, and embrace the skin they are in. On the blog I seek to recognize beauty in darker skin, discuss experiences and share with one another (whether it be hair/makeup tips, links , articles, poetry, pictures etc.) Unity is key, especially among women. We all need to support and uplift one another.

SA10: If you could give a piece of advice to budding bloggers and entrepreneurs what would it be?
My one piece of advice would be to make sure you are passionate about what you are doing or standing for. It comes from this quote by Maya Angelou: “You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” -Maya Angelou. Being genuinely interested and in love with what you are doing will help you to create the best product possible. It will also help you to stick with it when things get stressful. Overall, your genuine dedication will be evident to your audience through your interactions and the quality of your work.
I am SO extremely grateful for everyone's support in FBG & the vision I have for it's growth! xo
