Update #13: The Hundred Story House now on Kickstarter

Posted on February 1

Dear faithful backers,

I want to let you all know about my latest public art project called "The Hundred Story House" on Kickstarter

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/193679801/the-hundred-story-house

We could use all of the support that you gave for "Tourist-In-Chief" and a little more!

Thanks so much for the continued support

Project Description:

"The Hundred Story House" is a collaborative public artwork by film producer Julia Marchesi and public artist Leon Reid IV. It is a miniature Brooklyn brownstone whose windows open upon shelves of books (about 100 of them), which can be borrowed by the community. Situated in the Cobble Hill Park on Clinton Street, the House is a tiny lending library open to all and operating on the honor system -- take-a-book, leave-a-book. This is an effort to celebrate the BOOK as a physical object, and the pleasure of holding it in your hand. Or better yet, placing it in someone else’s.

Update #11: Come to Toursit-In-Chief Installation. Union Square Sat, Oct 1

Posted on September 29, 2011

Dear Faithful Backers,

We are thrilled to announce that "Tourist-In-Chief" has been permitted by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. We encourage all those in the New York area and beyond to come out and see the installation in Union Square Park, this Saturday, October 1 from 8am to 7pm. While you are there you can enjoy the many other projects featured in this year's Art In Odd Places festival.

Securing a permit to use literally the oldest statue in New York City as a basis for an installation was a daunting administrative feat. We would like to give special thanks to Phillip Z. Kimball, attorney extraordinaire whose words transformed an NYC Parks denial letter into a permit. Phil is an expert in intellectual property, new media, transactional/ corporate, dispute resolution/litigation. If you need to get legal, you need to get Phil.

We would again like to thank Kickstarter for taking on our project and of course you for backing it. Please visit the Tourist-In-Chief page that features the full list of backers.

Lastly, we are looking for volunteers to come out this Saturday to monitor the installation throughout the day.  Myself, Caroline and a few others will be present for the duration. The role of the volunteer is to report to TIC team or Park officials if it is observed that someone is tampering with the statue or installation. We expect none of this to happen but for security purposes we need to have an extra set of eyes in place. If you are interested, please contact me at: leon4th@gmail.com, 1-917-476-6047 Thanks so much again everyone and see you on Saturday! Tourist-In-Chief team

Leon Reid IV,
Born: Richmond, VA 1979
Education: BFA Pratt Institute '02 MA Central St Martin's '04
Lives/works: Brooklyn,NY

Listed as one of the “60 Innovators Shaping Our Creative Future” by Thames & Hudson, Leon Reid IV has been on the edge of public art for over 15 years. He grew up as a traditional graffiti writer (a.k.a VERBS) and quickly developed a knack for unconventional practices such as painting street signs and installing them during daylight disguised as a construction worker. His experiments in graffiti lead him to move beyond the genre and pursue site-specific installations under the pen-name Darius Jones. Reid is one of the few artists responsible for introducing sculpture into the language of street-art, his techniques of installation combined with his humorous and romantic themes have made a sizable impact on urban artists of his generation.

Leon Reid IV designs his work to communicate directly with the public at large. He considers every site an opportunity to create work that is meaningful and accessible to the community where it exists.
