Al Lowe to appear as a zombie in "Z", a zombie card trading game!
Hey gang,
Sorry I haven't been updating you guys as to what's going on lately. We've been travelling around the world from game show to game show because people want to pay us to fly out to their conferences to speak on how to successfully run a Kickstarter campaign. In the last 2 months I've been to Seattle (shoot the Al/Paul videos), Tel Aviv (to do our due diligence and work with Adventure Mob on design), Los Angeles (E3), Barcelona (Gamelab), and right now I'm in San Francisco because I was asked to speak at GamesBeat 2012. It's been so crazy around the studio!! All great things. Hopefully in a week or so I'll be able to share some screen shots of the disco, inside Lefty's, Larry's walk cycle, and other goodies but I can't release anything without Al & Josh's permission so please cut me some slack there.
Now, the real reason for the update. Al Lowe is going to appear as a zombie in the zombie trading card game called "Z". It's a Kickstarter project by one of the guys at Venture Beat named Sebastian. He was also coincidentally the moderator of our Kickstarter panel today at GamesBeat. He's an awesome guy, this is his dream, and he told us he'd be honored if Al would join Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert as special guest zombies or survivors in the game. Al & I thought it would be cool for him to be a zombie so that's what you're getting if you help Kickstart this campaign. Today they recently announced that one of the guys from Mythbusters is going to be a survivor in the game as well so the lineup is pretty damn cool. I'm a backer only because I think the game is going to be cool AND I totally want to see Al made up in Zombie makeup and eat the guy from Mythbusters. :) Anyway, this is our attempt to help push them past their goal and make their dream a reality too.

Have a great Wednesday night, gang!

(We reserve the right to let Larry or the Narrator make some kind of comment about it when he finds it, just in case your name itself isn't very funny.) And, of course, you'll get everything from the lower tiers as well. Note: these stars will ONLY be available at this tier, not at any of the higher tiers! So grab 'em while we've got 'em!

Lizard’s Edition: At the $1,100 pledge level, you’ll get one of two gigantic, durable, limousine-sized Leisure Suit Larry banners. Two is all we have, and we’re not making any more, so don’t even ask. These banners are signed by Al Lowe, and each contains an exclusive typo that makes it highly unlikely that anybody can (or would ever want to) duplicate them! These banners will not be available at any other tier! Plus, of course, you’ll also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition tier and below…because we care. Pervert’s Edition: So let’s say you want to pledge $2,500, but you can’t see yourself ever setting foot in a disco, real or virtual. We can’t blame you for that, but we’ll still make you famous. One of Larry’s most memorable scenes is when he attempts to buy a “lubber” at a convenience store, and the customers jump out from behind the aisles and scream “Pervert!” at poor, demented Larry. We’ll make YOUR face into one of those pervert-yelling patrons! You’ll also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below.
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $2,500 or more

Doggie Style Edition: Here’s another hypothetical: you’d love to be in the game, but you’re really more of a dog person than a disco-dweller or a pervert-shouter. We’ve got you covered! For a $5,000 pledge, we’ll immortalize your dog in the game. Whenever Larry gets…uh…refreshed by the dog outside, that’ll be YOUR dog! (Please, oh please, let it be a Shih Tzu!) You’ll also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below, because why should your dog have all the fun? (please add $15 for international shipping)
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $2,500 or more

Drunk's Edition: Here is another option for the $5,000 pledge. There are two featured drunks in Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, and you can be one of them! We’ll use your name and image to recreate you as a down-on-your-luck, staggering, sloppy drunk…and knowing you, that’ll be a cinch for our artists. You’ll also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below. Maybe you could sell some of those collectibles and get a fresh start?

Lefty's Bar Edition: For a pledge of $5,000, you can be a patron at the bar that Destructoid called the #1 bar in all video game history! We’ll use your name and image as one of the drinkers at Lefty’s, sitting right there on your very own stool, an “honor” previously reserved for Sierra employees only. You’ll not only become a part of Sierra history, you’ll also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below. (please add $15 for international shipping)
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $5,000 or more
2 backers Limited (4 of 6 left)
Disco Edition: For a $5,000 pledge, we’ll make you part of gaming history…by putting you into the game itself!!!! (So if you haven’t hidden the kids yet, now’s the time.) We will feature your name and likeness as one of the people in the Lost Wages disco. We are only going to turn 6 of the disco patrons into Kickstarter pledgers, so this is a VERY limited offer and will not be available in any other pledge reward tier. You will also receive all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below.
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $5,000 or more
1 backer All gone!
Naked Edition: Another alternative reward for a $5,000 pledge, and this is truly one-of-a-kind; only one pledger will be able to claim this reward. You can be the broke gambler wandering the streets of Lost Wages wearing nothing but a barrel! We will use your name and image as the Barrel Man (or Woman), and we promise not to show any of the naughty bits (“unless,” as Kathy Bates always says, “the script really calls for it organically”). You will also get all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below.
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $5,000 or more
0 backers Limited (1 of 1 left)
Age Verification Edition: Here’s our last unique pledge, and then we’ll shut up about the unique pledges and start talking real money. At the beginning of the game, we have famously used a bank of random questions called the “Age Verification” quiz to keep out players too young -- or too tasteful -- to play. We will use YOUR NAME in the bank of quiz questions. You will end up in every walk-through in every gaming website across the world! This is a one-of-a-kind offer; only one person will be able to claim this reward. Plus, you will get all the premiums from the Signed Edition reward tier and below!
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012Pledge $10,000 or more
1 backer Limited (1 of 2 left)
No Free Lunch Edition: For $10,000, we’ll create a memory that will last a lunchtime. You will be flown (domestic airfare only) to Seattle to enjoy lunch, dinner, or a morning-after breakfast with Leisure Suit Larry’s Mommy’s Baby Daddy, Mr. Al Lowe himself. He’ll sign whatever you want him to sign (except IRS forms and blank checks), answer all your questions about life, tell you some dirty jokes, and, best of all, he’ll do something that he’s never done before in the history of the world: he’ll pick up the check! We’ll put you up overnight and send you back home happy, fed, and loaded down with all the goodies from the Signed Edition reward tier and below. We’ll even give you the entire chocolate factory for your very own…oh, wait a minute, that’s a whole different licensed property.
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012

ZirconJimLaffer83, you are so helpful and informative. I'm sure Danny no longer feels like a 'big man' thanks to your altruistic guidance. You work is so supportive of Replay Games that I hope you get some type of special kudos at some point. It is so great that Danny's post was not left to linger. You took up the cause. Gratz.
Creator ZirconJimLaffer83 on July 17, 2012
@Danny: Go back through the last couple of pages of posts, and you'll see a trend. What is that trend? It's this: Once a post leaves the front page, KICKSTARTER REMOVES THE "VIEW PREVIOUS COMMENTS" BUTTON. If you'd looked, you would have realized this was done to ALL THE OLD POSTS, ON EVERY PROJECT. But instead, you acted like a spoiled brat and ranted - again - about how much you spent and "OMFG"...without realize Replay, Al, Josh didn't do anything. They didn't even have any control over it. Still feel like a big man?
Creator Riggo on July 16, 2012
@Danny... I doubt it was deleted. If it was one of the 1st posts, it probably just rolled of the most recent. For some reason only the last "x" comments on an update are available for viewing. KS does not show them all.
Creator Danny Roodbol on July 16, 2012
My posting was deleted? Seriously??
I forked over a thousand bucks and now my comment about this spam stuff about other projects is getting deleted? omfg...

Josh,
Thanks for clearing things up. I personally have had no questions about what Paul or Al or anyone else has been doing in all of their efforts. I guess I misunderstood or didn't pay attention to the little details on how all of the communication was supposed to work. I am truly only interested in how LSL is progressing, so from now on I will be checking the Replay Games forums instead of looking here. I hope the switch to a new developer makes it all a better game and I can't wait to play it!
Creator Tomimt on July 15, 2012
I assume things didn't work as planned with Adventure Mob then. But good thing that the developer change happens in the early stages, not when it's too late.

Creator Joshua Mandel on July 15, 2012
Hey, Guys,
Josh Mandel here.
As we've mentioned many times before, updates for the game, Q&A with the developers, and so on have all moved to the Replay Games forum (http://forums.replaygamesinc.com/). We haven't been posting a lot of news *here* because once our Kickstarter effort was completed, we don't have much more news about *Kickstarter.* Here on the Kickstarter site, we attempted to restrict ourselves to news pertaining specifically to Kickstarter. Which means we don't have much to report...other than news of Kickstarters we're trying to help with ourselves. (We'll also be posting info about the Kickstarter premium items as that information progresses!)
As for Paul's travels and PR efforts: please understand. Paul is not on the creative end of this game *at all.* He is not a programmer, an artist, a designer, a writer, or a composer; his involvement in the day-to-day development of LSL1 is extremely minimal.
So why, some of you are clearly asking, is he telling you about all the things he's doing?
One very simple reason...and it's something we've stated many times. I guess we just need to connect the dots for you.
Our goal is to reboot *all* of the Leisure Suit Larry games, not just LSL1. But we do not -- WILL not -- return to Kickstarter to raise funds to develop the subsequent Larry games. We are dedicated to funding the other games in other ways.
One way, of course, is with the money we earn from sales of LSL1. Another is to interest the press, investors, distributors, etc. in the games.
Those routes to funding require a helluva lot of time and attention. I'm not the one to do it; Al's not the one to do it (although Al, as the "public identity" of Larry in most people's minds, does have to participate sometimes). Paul knows more about guerilla marketing than Al and I put together; he has a great track record of getting games funded and launched. But if we're going to make LSL1 a big enough hit to fund LSL2 (and LSL2 a big enough hit to fund LSL3, etc.), it is CRUCIAL to the success of our long-term goal that he be out selling and promoting the LSL brand *constantly* and as energetically as possible. To ding him for this, or to suggest that the game will be made faster if he'd stop traveling and promoting the series, is simply wrong. Al and I are working away ourselves while Paul is off doing his thing. His thing doesn't slow us down, and when all is going smoothly, we don't slow HIM down.
For updates on the game, PLEASE go to the Replay Games forum. (We'll actually be putting out a couple of big announcements pertinent to the game -- and the series -- within a day or two!) And in the meantime, I hope you'll support Paul's efforts to bring the whole LSL series back into the public eye. Those efforts are integral to what Al and I are doing, and I think they're actually quite integral to the gist of why you all supported the game so well in the first place.
Thanks for reading, and I'll see you at the Replay Games forum. I check in there frequently.

I have to agree with the sentiment about all of this advertising other Kickstarter projects. I understand there are a lot of people in the industry that are "connected" in one way or another and they want to see their friends or colleagues succeed as well, but I don't think using the Update emails is the way to go. I personally don't care or want to hear about other projects this way. I can search the Kickstarter website for that information. I ONLY want updates to THIS game and the progress being made on THIS game in my Update email. PLEASE take this to heart and change how these updates have been handled. I am anxiously waiting for LSL updates when available...thank you!
Creator Andre on July 14, 2012
Seriously? Just focus your future updates about the game's development or at least include it in your spammy/ personal blog post about another kickstarter campaign or about traveling the world endeavors.
Creator Daniel on July 13, 2012
Justin, you just hired bad workers. I make sure my shit gets done on time, how I get there is my business. My boss gets this and so doesn't look over my shoulder. I've never had an unhappy customer.
Creator Bob on July 13, 2012
I'm disappointed, too. I thought this was about more than pre-ordering a product.
Creator Justin on July 13, 2012
@Daniel - programming also takes a lot of creativity. Why don't us IT guys get to screw around all day like the graphics guys? We used to think like you once upon a time then we fired half our graphics staff and hired on people that actually want to work for a living. Our productivity has gone through the roof since then. Yeah, no more nerf dart tournaments around here! Play Diablo III for 2 hours? What a joke!!!
Creator Daniel on July 13, 2012
@mitchell, Yes, exactly, it's definitely one thing you just can't do with artists/designers. If you push them or attack them in any small way, they tend to get frustrated, and then do a shitty job, sometimes unknowingly. Just let them do what they want, they want to go for 3 hour walk, drink 400 red bulls, play Diablo III for 2 hours, let them, because they are probably just recharging their imaginations. We all pledged for a game to be made, not to get updates, I for one would like to ensure that game is made the best it can be, no one is helping by whining, prodding and expecting, you just become a mini-publisher, the very thing we're all supposed to be hating.
Creator Tomimt on July 13, 2012
Al himeslf hasn't really posted a lot in Kickstarter. It's mostly Paul Trowe who posts here, I think. Josh Mandel has posted a little in comments sections.

But considering the backslash of this topic I'd held back from posting before I'd have something more concrete to post.
Creator Craig Payne on July 13, 2012
@Alex. I think we all enthusiastic for the new larry game :)
Creator Jacob Riff on July 13, 2012
I am beginning to wonder why Paul or Al hasn't been replying to this in some way. Almost all the comments to the post has been very negative and has contained a lot of frustration. Do they not read the comments or is it that they just don't care?
Creator DazzL on July 13, 2012
Ok, first of all, I'm not worried about the development of the game, despite the fact that you fly from place to place. But I agree with the people here that this is a distorted picture and somewhat disappointing to read.
It's okay to tell that kind of stuff in an update and to advertise for another kickstarter project, but it had been another story if you first had some news about the progress of this project. What we ask is more openness, for example what is the status of developmant right now, what still needs to be done, what is difficult in the proces, which person is responsible for what, how often you people go to the toilet, what is your favorite food, who's responsible of the junkfood mess from the day before, who is always getting the coffee for the rest of the team, who is the joker, who is broke in the morning etc, etc.. Just be more open and let us know what you do and what keeps you busy in the field of game development. It's not a problem then to let us know that you're flying around the world and advertise for another project.
Creator S. van Hengel on July 12, 2012
Ive backed 13 projects on Kickstarter and usually the updates from them contain a link to other projects as well.
Lighten up :)
Creator Alex - Mostly Harmless on July 12, 2012
@Justin
OK no worries :)
Been thinking about the update issue for a bit now and after my initial excitement wore off I realise that I don't really want any other than generic one's like we're 10% done or filming is finished now and on to post processing; that sort of stuff.
My reason is simple I've waited so long for a new Larry game I don't want to spoil it before I play it.
Creator Justin on July 12, 2012
@Alex - I'm not complaining about the plugs. Just stating the facts.
Creator Alex - Mostly Harmless on July 12, 2012
@Craig
I don't really have a problem with it, all the other projects have plugged each other and I think Paul was just trying to be nice and help advertise another project. That said some Larry updates would be very welcome even if they are a bit vague.
This isn't DFA and AFAIK Replay never said they would be sharing intimate details of the game with the backers, I think they just said they'd give us updates as things progress which is totally different.
@Justin
With over 60 days of campaigning under the belt that breaks down to 1 plug roughly every two and a bit weeks. Hardly excessive.
Creator Justin on July 12, 2012
@Serena - Just FYI, there's been at least FOUR updates plugging other projects. Not one.
Creator Palindrome Bob-XSF-I'm in AGL589-AK666 on July 12, 2012
Agree with Justin, this campaign is NOT among the three top projects on KS.
I do hope the ones who invited you paid for your flight and stay, because I most certainly did NOT pledge my money for THAT.
Creator Serena Nelson - Hero of the AGRM on July 12, 2012
After reading all of these posts of highly negative attacks on the team, I have to say WOW! People, you get one...ONE update with them asking to back another project. This must be the only one that you pledged for, because most of the other adventure game projects have been plugging the shit out of each other. There's solidarity in the community and all you have to do is bitch about ONE bloody update? If you don't like it, then unclick the "Remind Me" button. I'll be more than happy to receive anything from them. And guess what? I pledged $750 and I have no problems with seeing this. As long as the game gets made, I'm happy.
The ONLY thing that I agree with is that I'd love to see more updates on the progress being made on the game itself. I'm not demanding that it be given on a weekly basis, though.
Creator Justin on July 12, 2012
Why have people been flying YOU out to discuss the success of a kickstarter campaign? Again, no offense, but you only marginally went above your goal. If anyone should be talking about a successful campaign it should be these guys/gals:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console
Now that's how you knock it out of the ball park! On a side note, YAY, Space Quest was also funded!!! Two of the old time greats!
Creator Tomimt on July 12, 2012
You guys do realise, that the Tel Aviv trip they did was completetly game related, as they wanted to have a face to face session with the people who will be doing the graphics and the coding, so it's not like they've been having a holiday there.
Creator Mitchell Sutton on July 12, 2012
@Daniel - So don't piss them off, just shut up and deal with it, right?
Creator matthias sweertvaegher on July 12, 2012
although I too would love some updates, I don't blame them for NOT doing it. After all, AFAIK, they didn't promise anything like that. It's not like double fine, where it was part of the deal. I pledged for a copy of the game and that's the only thing they owe me.
That being said, a tangible update on progress would be great :)
about the promotion of other projects: they're doing these projects a favor, give'em a break..
Creator Mitchell Sutton on July 12, 2012
I agree, we donated so that a game could be made, not so that you could fly around the world and have a jolly old time...
Creator Justin on July 12, 2012
"Sorry I haven't been updating you guys as to what's going on lately."
No offense but you say that every time. You also said you would update your dev blog frequently and you don't do that either. I think most people here would NOT expect constant updates so....don't say you're going to give them if you're not. I think things would be much smoother that way.
Creator Bradford Stevens on July 12, 2012
I agree with the majority here. It's a slap in the face. Imagine if you used a traditional VC House to obtain your funds. Would you wait two and a half months without showing any progress, and then call them and say "Yeah... we have nothing to report, but a bunch of other people are paying us to fly all over and talk about our success. (Did I mention we are pushing back the release date?) Oh, and by the way, can you give us more money for these other projects our friends are doing?" It's an insult. We are no longer your fans - we are your investors now. Please get to work. We expect bi-weekly updates on some sort of progress.
Creator Daniel McAteer on July 12, 2012
I hate to jump on the negativity bandwagon but given the lack of pertinent updates it's hard not to. I'm also not sure it's a good idea to post about all the places you're getting paid to fly too when backers are expecting development updates. I love the Larry series and Al, just hate the communication so far. </3 :(

@philip the october delivery of game stopped happening after the stretch goals were met. Because of new content the release was moved to next year.

But yeah, I do agree that it would be better to see updates directly tied to the game itself, not just veiled pushes to other projects.
Creator Michael Allen on July 12, 2012
Honestly stay in the office and make the game you will have plenty of time to fly around the world and plug it and the other stuff as soon as its done and if this game sucks we know why
Creator Scott Truax on July 12, 2012
Since you're going around the world speaking about how to run a successful Kickstarter, this update should be another learning experience. Most campaigns that have been 'kicked off' will include plugs for other games, but they'll do it after a bunch of game updates, screenshots, videos, new info, etc that relates to their game. This update just makes most people frustrated - you're better off not updating at all.
I'm sure you could scrounge together a piece of concept art, anything.

I agree with many of the statements above. I'm disappointed with lack of communication from Al and Replay games about the progress of the development of the game. We still don't have a survey. We've seen no real new progress and I doubt the October deadline will be met. Both Ogre and Zombicide have been extremely good about keeping its backers up to date.
Please Al and Replay games, address our concerns and show us progress.
Creator Benjamin LeClair on July 12, 2012
Focus on the game we threw money at, please...

Never piss off artists/designers. They will end up doing a shitty job. Trust me I know, I'm one of those guys.
Creator Craig Payne on July 12, 2012
Sorry Alex, I fully agree with the previous sentiments. The problem is not the lack of Larry feedback, rather the constant promotions for other projects.
Creator Alex - Mostly Harmless on July 12, 2012
Oh lighten up people, the game is in development, of course they have to promote their project, that's what you do when you're in development and is perfectly normal. They're only been working on it for a few months and if you guys have been following any of the other kickstarter projects you'll know that it takes a while to get the game design down pat before work can get started on the assets etc.
bottom line everything is progressing fine, stop whinging and we'll start getting proper dev updates as soon as they have something to show us.
Creator Andriy Tanatar on July 12, 2012
Guys, firstly, I sincerely believe that you ran a successful Kickstarter project because you had a product that could sell itself (I mean, Larry is still very popular), and, secondly, I don't necessarily think that you should have licensed Larry the way you did with zombies.
Creator Jason Bright on July 12, 2012
I had a feeling there would be a lot of negativity about this post. I myself was a bit miffed when I read it. I am sure things are progressing swimmingly but maybe it was because I was expecting to read about the game instead of another kickstarter (sadface).
Creator Jared Thorbahn on July 12, 2012
Seems like all these updates just point to another kickstarter project.
Creator Tomimt on July 12, 2012
Only project I've seen having constant communication with the backers at the moment is Double Fine Adventure, but their whole premise was to let the backers inside the production. That's why they funded the documentary and such.

I do think the two months haven't been as idle some seem to think they've been. Most likely Al and Josh have been busy writing the new jokes and the art team in Tel Aviv has been firing in suggestions about the final looks of the game.

I think there is a very good reason why the backers are so negative. It has been two and a half months since the project got funded. I think it is reasonable to expect some sort of meaningful interaction with the backers by now. I for one do not think that the communication has been meaningful so far.
Creator S. van Hengel on July 12, 2012
Seriously guys ....ive got a hangover from last night and even i'm not that negative.
Lighten up will ya !!
Anyway looking forward to seeing those screenshots Paul.
