"The American Revolution" Production Newsletter No. 1.

Update #6 · Jan 1, 2012 · 5 comments

Dear The American Revolution supporter:

The last month has been truly miraculous for all of us working on The American Revolution thanks to your critical and generous support.

This is our first production newsletter as we begin our work to complete the documentary.  In January we will continue principal photography for the film and begin post-production including editing.

Amazing Archives
Each day working on The American Revolution has brought new and amazing surprises.  We just received an email yesterday from an antique dealer who recently came upon a box of reel-to-reel audio tapes marked “WBCN Masters.” They are professional oversized 10” tape reels that don’t play on home tape recorders built for 7" reels.  To listen to the oversized tapes, he built a transfer system pairing a home tape deck with a phonograph turntable that could hold the larger tape reels (see photos below).   When he saw the recent publicity surrounding the The American Revolution, he contacted us and offered us the tapes.  That’s 10 hours of WBCN Rare Tape Nights, ads, station ID’s and other material that had been lost to the ages that has now been recovered and will be professionally restored for use in the film as well as for the permanent archives we are assembling.

Above: Homemade tape transfer system created by listener Donald Steele
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our restoration of the hundreds of hours of audio tapes that have been shared with us for the documentary has been overseen by Paul Adams.  At various points, Paul has had to bake and steam audio tapes, many of which are more than 40 years old, as well as rebuild broken audio cassette cases and replace countless splices that have come flying off as the tapes are played.  This remarkable archival search and restoration effort for the film is a story onto itself that we will continue to update as our work progresses.

Michael: Thanks so much, and I hear your concern about the audio. We have been using a state-of-the-art studio that we helped equip to digitize tapes. Even so, working with tapes, some of which have not been played for more than 40 years, has been an adventure. More on that to come. The duplication system in the photos was built by a dedicated listener, who found a box of 10" reels containing WBCN material, and needed a way to transfer them. And it worked! Amazing, right? Time will tell what the most durable audio format is, but I have to say I have been impressed by how well tape has endured. Then again, so has vinyl. By the way, you should let your credentials be known in this area. Best BL

YIKES. That turntable "transport" looks dicey....it's easy enough to get a R2R deck that played 10" reels so glad you've found someone who's got one. Turntables are best for VINYL and VINYL is the best way to listen to music...

      BIll -
I was going to offer to help with the audio restoration, but I see you've got things under control. I do have an audio RtR deck that can playback the large reels if you need a loaner. I've had to play with tapes back to the 70's and 80's with lots of lousy tape splices. My original montage tapes reels (60+ edits a minute) didn't hold up as well over the years, but once you have them digitally, you can do wonders with them.

Good luck - I"m looking forward to your finished work!

      Tom

Steven: I asked Paul Adams, who oversees the audio restoration for the film, to answer your question. Here's his response:

"While baking or steaming a tape might sound pretty extreme, these old tapes have not been stored in the best conditions. Certain brands of recording tape from the 70's, especially AMPEX, get very sticky because the tape backing absorbs moisture. If they are not dried out, they will tear apart if playback is attempted.

The tapes are carefully baked at a low temperature in a special oven for several hours to dry them out. Once cool, the tapes are playable for about 24 hours. However splices usually need to be replaced due to the drying process.

Some tapes have the opposite problem if they were stored in someone's attic over the years. Extreme heat can make the tapes dry, brittle, and wavy. This makes them too delicate to play back. Those tapes are sealed in a container and exposed to steam for several hours to help soften and relax the tape enough that they can be played one more time to recover the audio."
      -------------------------------
The process of locating and then restoring the audio, film/video and photos from this era, has been an involved and painstaking process that will help preserve the history of the radio station, alternative media and of the great political, social and cultural changes that took place in the Boston area during this historic period. Thanks to Paul for his hard work on the project, and all of those who have generous shared their personal collections of material. - BL

What shape are the tapes in that they require baking and steaming? How does baking and steaming help the tapes?
