Project Info:
Timelines is an integrated video and dance performance that explores the cause and effect of traveling through time. What direction would my life have taken if I had made different decisions in the past? What if I could change the past? How would it effect the present or the future? These are the questions Timelines starts to explore.

In Timelines, life-sized videos of the dancer are projected while he performs amongst layers of fabric. Although there is only one performer, he may perform with as many as 20 versions of himself, representing his past and future. In one section of the piece, videos of the dancer split off every time the live performer turns a different direction.
The inspiration for this piece came from Memory Bank by Bridgman/Packer Dance. By allowing the projection to seep through multiple layers of fabric, Memory Bank creates an illusion of three-dimensional projection. This makes it tricky for the audience to distinguish the live dancer from the video dancer. I first started experimenting with the idea of three-dimensional projection when I collaborated with SHARP Dance Company on The Secret Part 2.
I’ve put together an incredibly talented production team to help me create Timelines:
- Megan Bridge, one of the co-directors of <fidget>, is the dramaturge. I have been working with Megan for about a year now. As dramaturge, Megan will act as a mentor guiding me through the process of creating a piece.
- David Konyk will be the choreographer as well as perform in the piece. David dances with Leah Stein Dance Company and Group Motion Dance Company. I had the opportunity to work closely with David last year when he was an Artist in Residence at thefidget space and premiered his evening length work, Back to the Place I First Left You.
- Jon Shapiro will be the composer. Jon occasionally works with <fidget>, which is how I met him.
About the Artist:
In 2008 Lauren Mandilian received a Master’s degree in Digital Media from Drexel University. For her thesis, Mandilian created a collaborative multimedia dance performance named Information Overload. The piece included animation, projection on fabric, real time video filtration and motion capture. Over the past 4 years she has had the opportunity to work on 2 Broadway musicals and collaborate with artists like renowned photographer, Lois Greenfield, Klip Collective, anonymous bodies, <fidget>, Nichole Canuso, The Philadiction Movement and readySetGO.
This project is her first professional solo piece and is being created through the Artist in Residence program at thefidget space.
