About this project

I'm Laura Brown (the printmaker in the equation) and I have been awarded a residency at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (YAY!), which means I have four months of access to some of the best letterpress, typesetting, book binding, and papermaking facilities in the country. It also means I get to take the work of some of my favorite local and local-ish poets, and make it into visual art! Not only that, but we will hold a reading and presentation at the end of the residency and YOU could get an invitation to have dinner with those of us involved!

Because I like exploring size, form, sequence, and narration, this project will take a few different forms: a pocket-sized chapbook (because who doesn't want a little poetry in their pockets?), a set of poem postcards (printed exclusively for Kickstarter backers!), and a set of larger broadsides for those blank walls.

Until very recently, the residency also came with a stipend for supplies, but because of budget cuts, that is no longer the case (I found this out the day I submitted my application). Boo, economy; hello, Kickstarter community! In order to make this project a reality, I need materials like paper, linoleum blocks, and polymer plates. The goal amount of $1,500 would cover these supplies, as well as postage to make sure everything arrives to my backers safe and sound. If I am able to raise more than that, yipee! I get to be a little more extravagant in my paper choices, making the project especially fancy. Here's the thing: I don't have much time! The residency starts April 1 and I want to be ready to get to work as soon as I can.

This is a really exciting opportunity for me because not only will I learn a lot and get the chance to work with a wonderful community of artists, it is also a really big step in my career. Last summer, I quit my job in cubeland and have been working on making it as an artist ever since. I have a few other exciting things lined up for this year (my first solo show! my first magazine publication!) and I am looking forward to working hard and applying for graduate school and gallery representation by the end of the year. I am incredibly thrilled to be able to do all of this, and I am so grateful for your support.

I will keep you all updated as much as I can between now and the deadline (and after, of course), here on my Kickstarter page, under the 'updates' tab. I will announce the finalized list of poets, and show you what I am working on in preparation for the residency, so stay tuned! I am an avid tweeter and blogger, so feel free to find me elsewhere (links are in my profile!).
