Enemy, level and enhancement amendments to both FlaTank and FlaTank Prime. I love this game and I want you to.. also.
What is FlaTank?
FlaTank is a retro style tank maze game for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. It looks simple and it is simple to play, but it gets harder and is very enjoyable. FlaTank Prime is the pay version of the game and it already has many features the plain old vanilla FlaTank doesn't have. Neither of them are where I want them because they were rushed to publication. See the rest of the story!
When I was a child, our household had an Atari 2600 and my favorite game on that console was Combat- the tank game part. One of the settings allowed the enemy tanks to fire automatically and I remember wishing they would move and thinking how hard it would be for Atari to make the tanks smart enough to really fight you.
Shortly thereafter, the movie and game Tron came out the realization of that desire for smart tanks came to be. BUT my mommy would not give me the quarters! AND when I did get to play it, I had to play all the other parts of the game too!
I first surfed the internet in 1999, became hooked and promptly got a degree in computer science. While in college, I wrote my tank game for PC and the tanks were smart enough to drive to the end of the corridor you are in, fire, and drive away. The game was actually difficult to beat. Sadly, the game was lost on a failed floppy disk- it's out in the garage now in one of the piles. I don't have an image to show you of that one.
I began rewriting the game and during brainstorming with my son, we came up with new enemies and other ideas that are now in FlaTank. I lost interest in writing it because only my son and I would be playing it and I had no concept how to get it out to masses for PC.
Android the Beautiful
Just days before 2012, my interest in tinkering and interfacing computers with the real world and the research of it yielded the knowledge that I could code for Android devices. Yeah! An excuse to code! What to make? My old project was reborn. And I could share it with the world.
A Rush Job Through the Spaghetti Code
I was happily coding and designing away on my game when a very good friend of mine told me that RIM was bribing developers to come over to the BlackBerry side. They were giving away PlayBooks to new developers and there was a cut off date only two weeks away. It occurred to me that I was a developer and I would have to hurry of I was going to finish the game on Android and convert it to BlackBerry. So I did. The end result requires some polish.
During my Coffee Break
Brain fried after working all day in the real world, coming home and developing 8 more hours every night, I took a more passive role while thinking about subsequent games I would release. During that time, I dabbled in Open GL and I spent a whole month learning to model and animate 3d in Blender which I used to make my promo video on the top of this page and am using in the next game in the series.
The Next Push
Dissatisfied with FlaTank's sluggish game-play performance on BlackBerry, I began looking into how to speed it up. So I began converting FlaTank to an Open GL interface. After a month of learning and coding, I realized my spaghetti code was not going to be fixed with hardware acceleration. Yet another deadline loomed ahead as Amazon was going global with its support for Kindle Fire soon. I delved into my code, fixed my BlackBerry performance issue, added several enhancements, and released FlaTank Prime.
Why is the Word Fun in Funding?
I do well in my business, and the last few months I have been hammered with work leaving me too exhausted to do anything but marketing for my game when I get home and summer work is going to be slowing down soon. It has occurred to me that I want a career change to focus only on my mobile app business. That will take a while and I have been pumping quite a bit of money into advertizing. Right now, I believe FlaTank is being played by about 20000 people around the world and I have be working extensively(just google Flatank and you'll see I've been busy) on raising its position in the various ranking systems that effect its success. I have code in place that allows me to talk to all of my users and several other hidden goodies. Please Help me! Your help will allow me focus on quality production rather than getting the word out or hurrying so I can get a return on my investment.
What exactly is the money for?
I want to take a week and a half off from my day job and bring both FlaTank and FlaTank Prime up to version 2.0. With that release, I will feel the game is where it needs to be and I can then move on to my next project. For a few months now production has been on hold because I have been so busy with all the other things that vie for my time. Most of the funding will be for actual code writing(artificial intelligence and user interface enhancements), level design, and support media(music and sounds) and whatever is left will go toward marketing. Here is an approximate break down:
Coding new enemies ~ 24 hours
Write and edit new drum loops, music and sounds ~8 hours
Updating interface between levels and menu items ~8
Design 200 levels ~8
Misc. issues and testing ~8
The pre-production of the sequel to FlaTank has already begun. A name has been devised and although that game is still 2d with a more modern interface, all the sprites are modeled in 3d for use in the sequel after that one. I can't tell you how I excited I am about FlaTank Zwei. There will be an Ouya version of that game!
Here is a picture I took today of my dog Milo doing mostly nothing. This only relevant because the data file that contains all of the mazes is a .mil file named after him and level 36 has his name on it...
AND I'm going to train him and film him officially launching FlaTank Zwei!
