Clown Town is a story of killer clowns as avenging spirits for victimized children and how the hidden, internal effects of abuse might look if manifested on the outside. The story began in 2010 as an entry in a national talent search for new comics creators. Artist, Amanda Rachels, and writer, Kevin LaPorte, wanted to create a story with a heart, with some meaning, so we searched for a core theme with resonance.

Each of us unfortunately encountered the travesty of child abuse at points in our lives, so we decided to craft a tale of merciless protectors of mistreated kids. We searched for icons of our culture intended to be funny and comforting to children but inexplicably terrifying to many adults and came up with…CLOWNS…they became our terrible protectors.

Clown Town was originally a slasher horror story: clowns rampaging through small town America, cutting down abusers and neglecters while struggling with a core group of townsfolk including our young heroine, Chelsea Schroeder. Through Chelsea’s eyes, the nature of the comic really changes from horror to dark fantasy, when she gets lost in the wicked circus of the rampaging clowns, and we see the effects of mental scar tissue made flesh. There are uncomfortable moments and even scary ones, but there is also no shortage of humor and tenderness.

The 92-page Clown Town core story was self-published over four single-issue comics, along with two related short stories, throughout 2011 and early 2012. For this fundraising campaign, the core story to be presented in the Graphic Novel is being fully re-edited and re-worked in terms of the lettering and script, to add consistency and quality and to bring the entire work up to date with our current level of comic craftsmanship!
