Love, money, clipboards, and YOU all combine to make a tactical, dialogue-driven game of persuasion!
7/6/12 EDIT: Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who contributed! Alas, it looks like the game won't receive funding, but I'm going to continue to develop it anyway! It won't be as ambitious, but the game will still be an awesome canvassing experience, and you can follow updates at http://www.jacksonlango.com! Thanks again!
Hi, I'm Jackson Lango and I'm working on a new game! It's called Canvasser. It's a quick and tactical game of persuasion inspired by my own canvassing experiences!
A big, corporate retail chain has decided to clearcut your town's beautiful forest and move in! The only way you can stop them is by asking people on the streets for money. This strange behavior is also known as canvassing.
As a street canvasser, you have to make the people you talk to care about the forest and trust you to save it. You have to make them want to give you money. Every moment you'll be thinking, "What topics will make this gal care?" or "How much money should I ask for?" or "Does this guy even have any money?" Each decision matters, because if you don't raise enough money in time, your neighboring, mystical forest could be gone the next day.
Canvasser translates real-life canvassing action into a tactical, menu-based game of persuasion. It takes gameplay and dialogue, and combines them into a really unique set of mechanics! At the moment, Canvasser is in pre-alpha, and exists in a arcade-y, one-round state. The base game is complete, but the scope is small. The potential however, is big, and I'm determined to explore it.
I'm going to do that by adding tons of civilian responses to keep the player on their toes, and by fleshing out the town with unique locations that each have their own strategic value. I'll add tons of facial features and clothing items to make the civilians and character creator as varied and encompassing as possible. I'll make the player's interactions with co-workers and other NPCs actually depend on how much they trust you, opening up a bunch of branching paths through the campaign. Finally, I want to add a strong narrative backbone to the entire experience, with hard-won fights, lovable characters, and everything else that makes a story great. I am determined to explore Canvasser's potential.
To pull off this vision as a full-time student, I'm going to need to hire a programmer and an artist to help me, as well as pay my musician who's already on board. And that's gonna cost money. That's where you come in. Together, we can rock the world with the most balls-to-the-wall, fantastic canvassing game our planet Earth has ever seen. Together we can move beyond the awkward half-dialogue, half-action games of the past, with mechanics that combine both as a unique whole. So grab your clipboard, uncap your pen, and together let's become Canvassers.
Who's making the game?
With the funds from Kickstarter, a few trusted partners and I will bring the world of Canvasser to life. I am Jackson Lango and I've been developing games independently for six years. I also spent my last summer canvassing! I've been working on the game Canvasser for the past five months, and recently submitted an alpha build to the GameSIG Intercollegiate Game Showcase where it won the Penguin award! If you'd like to know more about me and the game, check out the blurb to the bottom-right, or visit my website where I blog about development!
How much will the game cost?
Zero! Zilch! This game will be absolutely free! That means no DRM or paid DLC either! Pretty good deal, huh?
When will the game be released?
I'm expecting this game to be done in January 2013, provided we survive our Mayan apocalypse. However, I should be able to start Beta tests in the last months of 2012, and continue them right up to release.
What systems will Canvasser support?
Canvasser will support PC and Mac. If the Kickstarter funds really start pouring in, we might be able to add more formats as well ;).
What will the system requirements be?
Canvasser should run smoothly on most low-end computers. The game's system requirements will be equal to the requirements of the latest version of Adobe Flash Player at the time of release, which is viewable at the following link: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/tech-specs.html
What is SOW and why does it keep getting mentioned in the recorded gameplay?
SOW is the fictional canvassing organization that you work for in Canvasser. It stands for Saviors of Wildlife.
