Hey Backers!
1.) Please, check out pictures of the construction on the Art Not Arrests website if you haven't already -- Progress is quite exciting! http://www.artnotarrests.com/design/process.html
2.) We are woking on getting rewards in the mail over the next couple weeks! Hang tight :)
3.) Upcoming Event: Film Screening - 'The Interrupters'
Date: May 12th, 2012 (Raindate, May 13th)
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Crow Hill Community Garden - 730 Franklin Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11238
Please come enjoy an evening in the garden as we show "The Interrupters". Please bring folding chairs or a blanket to sit on. After the film, participants will be invited to stay and discuss what we can do in our community to prevent gun violence. Zip-cuffs will be available for donation, to be decorated and added to the installation at the event.
"The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three Violence Interrupters who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz, this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities."Update #12: Construction SATURDAY!
Hi All,
Just a friendly reminder that we will be at the garden starting the construction for Art Not Arrests this Saturday (tomorrow) April 7th, from 10am - 6pm. Please feel free to stop by and lend a hand if you are around :) The garden is on Franklin Ave, between Park and Sterling.
We will have the Pins, totes, tee-shirts, and Hoodies with us, so if we owe you one and you want to grab it, please stop by and introduce yourself (and save us the cost of shipping) :) Necklaces and Bracelets are not finished yet.
See you there!
Lana & Kristen

I hope you will still be able to attend if you were planning to, and perhaps we can get a couple new volunteers this time around. Please adjust your RSVP on the facebook event if it has changed.

Update #9: WE MADE IT!
3 days ago, I was getting ready to lose hope on the project, we had less than 60 hours left to hit our goal - which was $2500 away at the time. I was feeling pretty grim and hopeless. But instead of curling up in my bed and crying which, I'll admit, I kinda wanted to do.... Kristen and I grabbed our notebooks and went begging door to door for donations from the local businesses in the area. We wrote 7 thousand emails to friends and family members and sent the information to as many blogs as possible in hopes that somehow we could make it work.
Let me just say, WOW, what a tremendously supportive community we have here in Brooklyn! Our neighbors shared our project and threw in their last minute donations, which added up quickly. The local business owners dove right in - excited to help in any way possible - even those that weren't able to help financially offered me lunch, donuts, coffee, or the option to have them cater our events throughout the summer. The project was published in lots of blogs including the Huffington Post! Our friends and families gave what they could, and the members of my Lana's gym (CrossFit South Brooklyn) contributed almost a thousand dollars collectively! (talk about an amazingly supportive fitness community).
After all this, here we are! OVER our goal! What an amazing couple of days it has been!
Seriously, thank you all SO much! We have a lot to do now :)

With this donation, we would be SO HAPPY that we would custom design a beautiful 'ART NOT ARREST' plaque with your name on it, and incorporate it into the design of the installation. The whole installation, built with you in mind, and marked as such. Additionally, you will have provided enough funding to almost completely cover the cost of the cuffs, which will allow us to raise a LOT of money toward next summers, under-the-canopy art classes. Really it's hard to come up with a reward for this much generosity.

Lana is an architectural designer interested in the communicative power of design. Her work explores the stories a product or piece of architecture tells to the public. She has always believed that these stories can be found hidden within the details, leading her into extensive professional experience in facade design and technical envelope detailing. From lighting to furniture, apartments to opera houses, Lana uses texture, materiality, and technical connections to push the linguistic attributes of the built environment.
