Featured La MaMa Cantata Performer: Roe Hartrampf

Update #9 · Aug 18, 2012 · comment

Roe Hartrampf is a performer from Atlanta, Georgia transplanted to Brooklyn, New York.

He has work regionally, Off-Broadway, and on Television, most recently shooting a pilot for CBS and performing in The Bad Guys at Second Stage. Roe Has worked with Liz Swados on several occasions in New York as well as internationally, performing in From the Fire at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

You can watch him being gratuitously silly on the webseries SRSLY here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH9eqnD6C0M&feature=plcp

His favorite Cantata moment is:

My favorite moments of the show are the more intimate songs where we get to learn about Ellen on a human level. We all know Ellen had a big public personality with the bell-ringing and accents, but hearing first hand accounts of people who were very close to her, set to Liz and Kris' beautiful, thoughtful music in songs like "Bench" and "Angel Smile" always leave me in awe of Ellen Stewart. Hearing the people who work at La Mama today speak about Ellen and get choked up reminds me that not only did this woman have a global impact on theater, she also left a deep, personal impression on the lives of each individual who met her. And that is my favorite thing about the La Mama Cantata. We reveal and revel in both sides of Ellen.

My Favorite Cantata Moment:
There are many amazing moments in the Cantata that I look forward to every time we perform it, but some of the special and unique-to-Liz moments are when we are allowed to use our voices in a dangerous and wild way. Oftentimes, as singers, we are supposed to make the most beautiful or the cleanest or the most technically accurate sound; our voices sound clean, safe, impressive, etc. In this piece, there are several times when we can and should sing with wild abandon and the sound is quite raw and feels exciting and risky to me. The singing can become a visceral ritual rather than a technical exercise.

Why I'm excited to go on tour:

I'm thrilled to see how this piece is received by people whose first language is not English. I think it will be fascinating to communicate the richness of this piece with more than our English words.
