About this project

We invite you to be part of our Alaskan Artist Residence located in Talkeetna, AK. The Residence has two beautiful functions:

1) Providing a place of retreat, rest, and recovery to exhausted artists, while offering them the chance to explore community .
2) Connecting a vibrant, rural Alaskan community with the national and international arts community

Launched in 2008, the La Familia Gallery (LFG) Alaskan Artist Residence has quickly become an exciting part of the community in Talkeetna, AK. Participants volunteer their time at The Denali Arts Council, the Talkeetna Museum, local arts events, and much more. It is an experience that is equal parts healing and creativity.

The Residence - which is funded and managed by a small artist cooperative located in Seattle, WA - is currently supported solely by nominal Residence Fees and the generosity of the founding Gallery. However, more is needed in order create a fully-sustainable Artist Residence Program that can thrive in the current economic climate.

In order to continue to provide artists with the best possible Alaskan Artist Residence, we are launching a two-part Sustainability Drive in order to:

1) Repair the Residency plumbing & roof, which have been affected by the cold Alaskan winters: $1,200
2) Complete improvements, such as installing cabinets and closets, to make bedrooms more usable for artists: $1,500
3) Offer 6 One-Month Grants for Artists to attend the Residence over the next 12 months: $4,800
4) Establish an Emergency Fund to cover surprise expenses: $7,500

Upon completion of Part One of the Sustainability Drive, La Familia will then Kickstart Part Two, which will include building a detached Artist Workspace so artists can comfortably create year round (rather than painting in -20F weather, as they have been doing) as well as offering a space for artists to teach classes to local Talkeetna residents during their stay.
